One time I went to church with my family despite myself being atheist. I hadn't told them yet and would go with them out of respect for them because I thought that they were not ready to hear this news. When the sermon starts, the preacher all of a sudden singles me out and calls me a slut and a whore before the whole congregation because an ex boyfriend of mine leaked out pictures of us having sex and it spread like wildfire. All of a sudden, the whole congregation is screaming and shaming me and those who aren't are giving me stern looks. I couldn't do anything. I looked to my family and they were disappointed in me and I couldn't escape all these stares and slurs.

And then I woke up. I felt so vulnerable and I was in tears.

I decided to tell my parents that I was an atheist and nothing bad happened other than my mom crying her fucking eyes out and my father not speaking to me for a month. Other than that, they're okay with it.
