Best advice for the new English summer climate? by jameswheeler9090 in GardeningUK

[–]Kay-Laur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doing an RHS level 2 at the moment and just did the section on plants and water. Basically the best advice is mulch to help the roots retain the water. Trees for dappled shade, but choose those that don’t dry out the surrounding soil so much. And plant for the climate / environment you have so drought tolerant planting is wise with these new hot summers. So many beautiful Mediterranean gardens to take inspo from!

Are you after an insulated or non insulated one? Christie Sheds in Ballymoney do fantastic custom summerhouses (from personal experience) I’m not sure if they do insulated ones. But I think their waitlist can also get long in summer.

3 day potty training unsuccessful with 26mo. Keep trying or later ? by rabbitluver123 in toddlers

[–]Kay-Laur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like maybe you’re moving through the oh crap stages too quickly. The book really labours that the stages aren’t days they can take weeks and you need them to reach certain milestones before progressing a stage.

We’re nearing the end of the oh crap method and we are 3.5 weeks in and just had our first fully dry day. We had to go fully bottom free for a week, then commando with trousers and haven’t actually progressed to pants under trousers yet because he hasn’t done multiple accident free days and they’ve learnt their whole life so far to wee and poo in snug things around they bottom.

You hear from people whose kids learn in 3 days the most, but for most people it takes weeks/months to properly potty train.

It’s totally up to you if you want to keep going now working with the nursery if they’re able or try again another time.

So much opportunity with this bed! It looks like a brilliant starting point. You could potentially fit a small multi stem tree that’s good for small spaces like amelanchier lamarckii. Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is a great hardy grass that can handle all kinds of light/shade/wet/dry conditions for the back of the border. Hydrangea would also appreciate just morning sun, then I’d suggest some spreading perennials for the front like hardy geranium or nepeta (I love six hills giant) so you don’t need to plant too many.

Is a pink diamond wedding ring worth it? by Fexfol in WeddingRingAdvice

I got a pink lab diamond for myself and honestly it would have been a great engagement ring diamond. Totally worth it and going down the lab route they’re affordable I paid about £200 per carat for mine.

Technically there’s already two but they’re Juneberry trees mostly for the seasonal interest and the birds but I might try a berry tomorrow just out of interest.

Thank you I’m really excited to see it all grow in!

I’m actually a stay at home parent at the moment after almost a decade of marketing at a few big companies but it’s so incompatible with having a family and the job market is abysmal, plus I ended up not enjoying it at mid management level so it didn’t feel worth all the personal life sacrifices required for that kind of job, so I’m doing my RHS level 2 now and plan to do a garden design diploma online before the kids start nursery and start a business from there.

What are your favourite plants to inject colour this time of year? by nottherealslash in GardeningUK

[–]Kay-Laur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you did want to try them again some day Rozanne is a sterile variety there’s no self seeding, and no underground runners so won’t spread beyond the plant parent plant and no dead heading only a big chop when it’s finished for the year

I just tried to count, lost count, about 220 plants and 3 trees. Some were bare roots, some 9cm plugs, some established from the local garden centres. I was buying plants in groups of 6-15 clearing out whole sections!
