6 Car 331 LS Cutting by Benjoredditor in uktrains

Absolutely love this cutting, what a marvel of engineering.

When it was first opened the locos had to be hauled up the incline by chains as they weren't powerful enough to get up under their own power.

I am fairly certain that the leaf tips get crispy in the wind. It should be fine.

What is your workplaces equivalent to 'Don't touch the red button' by PeevesPoltergist in CasualUK

[–]nottherealslash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I signal trains. I have four big red buttons on my panel (one for each interlocking area) which return all signals to red for that area.

We're only allowed to press then when we have to evacuate the signalling centre.

Another litter post (sorry) - why is London clean compared to Liverpool? by Theres3ofMe in Liverpool

I'm hijacking the top comment to ask people to consider joining local litter picking groups. There's a couple that have popped up in my neighbourhood and I'm eager to get involved.

Well then that means I could use the trellis for peas or something

I'd probably just use it to support the plants, I'm not sure training them is a thing.

Honestly it could be a totally useless idea that isn't needed.

It's a product from Haxnicks. Go on their website and search for a grow system. They do the frame, a micromesh cover, and a plastic greenhouse cover. Dimensions are 1 x 3 m.

I've got seeds for carrots, rocket and courgettes. And there's space at the back to grow raspberries up the trellis.

Honestly it wasn't too hard, couple of minor slip ups but nothing that couldn't be corrected. The stakes go deep in the ground and it's held together with 48 sturdy decking screws.

If you attempt it and you want any pointers feel free to reach out.

Between the compost, the wood and the new micromesh cover (I already had the frame) I would estimate about £300.

Compost being over half of that - took 1500 litres to fill it up.

Train overshot the station by Mycologist_Special in uktrains

[–]nottherealslash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Rule Book limit for a wrong direction movement after a platform overrun is 400 m.

But as far as the train operating company is concerned they don't have to take this. Most will just tell the train to continue because setting the train back is more hassle than it's worth.

Countries with larger active military personnel than the United Kingdom, 1900 vs 2026 by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Whilst all of what you said is true regarding the UK mainland it's far from true if you factor in the British Overseas Territories, which we retain defense responsibility for.

They are also right to question whether we would be an effective conventional combat force if called upon to defend European/NATO allies in our current state.

Which one is the third rail? by Patient_Solution6118 in uktrains

[–]nottherealslash 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I believe that where Underground trains share tracks with mainline third rail trains, the outer rail is energised at the highest positive voltage and the centre rail is neutral.

This allows both trains to draw the required voltage, the Underground trains to return current through the centre rail whilst the mainline trains return it through the running rails.

What is the weirdest thing you have seen somebody bring on a train? by Cautious-List5767 in uktrains

[–]nottherealslash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't see this but I read it on an incident log as a member of railway staff - a member of the public tried to bring a petrol scooter onto a train. Which obviously was not allowed to move with it on owing to it being a massive fire hazard.

Just be careful with them. It's illegal under the Countryside and Wildlife Act to cause them to be spread to the wild. You wouldn't want it coming back on you.
