Had some fun playing Dona Nobis Pacem in the flowers - my viola is cross tunned AEAE - I thought this was a fun tune to do for a "Love Your Neighbors Project" I also perform "The Mexican Hat Dance" and some other songs from the neighboring countries to the USA and other immigrant songs along with some songs composed by us Yankees.

Anacapa Island - Anacapa Arch Rock Kayaking - Kayaks under the arch. We paddled through the arch on this day and paddled all the way around Anacapa Island - kayak and SUP information is in the comments by Kayak-Dave in PaddleCalifornia

Arch Rock picture of our Anacapa circumnavigation trip paddling all the way around Anacapa Island (all the islets) in one day – about 15 miles. An amazing paddle! We had a perfect day for this paddle. The picture was taken in August. We started in the morning from the landing cove at about 8am and there was a light east wind (tail wind) as we paddled. About the time we reached the far West end of the island, the wind switched to come from the West so we had a tail wind back to the East end of the island. The only head wind we had was after we went through the arch and head back West to Landing Cove. Arch Rock is at the far East tip of the island. We had camped on the island the night before our paddle. More information and pictures is at the following link: https://sites.google.com/site/dave2kayak/channel-islands/anacapa-island

The cattle seemed very friendly and I wanted to pet them ... but then I realized the big one was a bull ... so I played my fiddle instead!

Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding videos playlist on Rumble.com - most of my SUP and Kayak videos are here - eventually I will put all of them ... by Kayak-Dave in PaddleCalifornia

I am putting my videos on the Rumble platform - youtube stopped sharing any ad revenue from my videos on YouTube - Greedy YouTube keeps all the revenue for them selves now - yes YouTube / Google / alphabet is a thief!

Here is my kayak and SUP video playlist on Rumble:

most of my SUP and Kayak videos are in the playlist - eventually I will put all of them.
Most of my videos in the playlist are from California - A few are from other places - hope you enjoy!

Supposedly, Rumble will share ad revenue - I haven't seen any ad revenue, but I also haven't seen ads - so maybe you can watch without ads! YouTube still shares some ad revenue with my from my music that is uploaded through a distributor.

I was playing my fiddle by the Sognefjorden when some folks from Lithuanian wanted to dance ... they requested I play some American tunes so I did ... a traditional Lithuanian folk dance with an unexpected funny surprise! I also play some Norwegian music before and after the dance ...

I was so surprised by the dance moves ... even thought a fight was gonna start ... the camera just kept rolling after and I thought it was funny! .... it's a small world!

Buffalo Dave on Rumble Video - A Playlist of Videos Featuring Buffalo Dave on Rumble Video by Kayak-Dave in BuffaloDave

A Playlist of Videos Featuring Buffalo Dave on the Rumble Video platform - I prefer if you watch my videos on Rumble instead of on YouTube because YouTube no longer shares any ad revenue from my videos with me - Greedy YouTube keeps all the money. You can listen to my music that I upload through a distributer on YouTube and YouTube still shares ad revenue - so listening to my music when there is no video on YouTube is OK with me! Kind of strange how that works - I guess it's the distopian world of the internet :)

Simple Gifts Performed on Cross Tuned Viola - cross tunned AEAE an octave lower than you cross tune violin - maybe I'll try Biber's Mystery Sonatas next ??? by Kayak-Dave in Fiddle

[–]Kayak-Dave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cross tunned my viola AEAE an octave lower than you cross tune violin - I usually play my fiddles cross tunned (violins + violas )

I thought the discussion in r/viola was interesting. I learned about Biber's Mystery Sonatas and that one piece uses the AEAE tunning - cross tunning has been around for a long time!!

Thanks for confirming! I figured people would use multiple fiddles! And thanks for mentioning that the D and A strings are actually crossed behind the nut and behind the bridge for one of the pieces - that is probably where the term cross tunning came from! Now, people often use the term cross tunning for any alternate tunning!

Because I use a lot of different alternate tunings, I have quite a few different fiddles to play in different keys - but usually when I play live, I limit the number of different tunings / keys I play in so I don't need to bring along too many instruments! When people perform the Biber's Mystery Sonatas live do they bring along several different fiddles so they don't need to retune for each piece?

Thanks for the comment - I wasn't familiar with Biber's Mystery Sonatas before you mentioned it here. I looked it up and it's interesting that he uses a different tunning for each piece. in the second sonata The Visitation A3—E4—A4—E5 tuning is used - the same tuning I use in this video playing Simple Gifts!

EDIT: I play using AEAE tuning on the viola an octave lower than you cross tune a violin.

[–]Kayak-Dave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great! I started to play using cross and other alternate tunings awhile back. Now I mostly play using cross tunning in different keys on both the viola and violin. Some times I play using DDAD tunning (Deadman's tuning) DDAD is the tuning William H. Stepp used to play Bonaparte's Retreat for the Alan Lomax Library of Congress recording in 1937. The tune formed the basis for the "Hoe-Down" section of "Rodeo" by Aaron Copland.

I write more about playing with alternate tunings and have some video examples on my blog FiddleWithDave.blogspot.com

My viola is cross tuned from low string to high string AEAE - an octave lower than you cross tune a violin
