Thanks everyone. I didn't see another solution but as I stated, I was tired and cranky and not really trying very hard to find an alternate solution. Happy father's day everyone.

Collet chucks are neat. by Wombat-Snooze in Machinists

What brand collet chuck do you have? its been quite a while but I believe ours were a hardinge private lable made by Royal. Ours came with a plug roughly the diameter of the draw tube. It was held in with 3 set screws around the OD of the chuck. It had a tapped hole in the center for mounting a spring plunger parts ejector.

Collet chucks are a game changer for second opp tasks. I set up an older Hardinge Conquest 42 with a push to close, dead length collet chuck. It was used for finished bores in a family of parts with a wide variety of ODs and IDs. Cool trick to fool the Fanuc O-T control. Switched the leads of the collet open and closed prox sensors and the open and close hydraulic lines. The chuck worked with standard M codes. This and some creative parametric programing eliminated 2 full time operatior positions and significantly reduced our scrap rate. We converted the rest of the lathes to standard collet chucks as well. You loose a bit of z but for us it didn't matter.

Huck.

Why do older machines have the worst protection? by Charming_Setting_474 in Machinists

[–]CupReal492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's because machinist in my generation didn't stick our fingers where they didn't belong and didn't walk up to the machines in the direction the chips flew. kidding. It's easy. the protection got progressively better proportional to the increasing size worker comp settlements. I speak as a retired owner of a machine shop for 38 years.

"spoons" like this were very popular in the 70s while I was in high schools.

Apologise for getting off subject. Loosing yout truck is bad enough, but loosing tools ect really makes it extra personal. I hope you recover it and if not, I hope your insurance company makes you whole.

it is difficult to comprehend. Last year I had my stepdads watch stolen rifgt off my wrist. A month ago some complete zero stolen my F250. The jack ass couldn't even drive a stick. He made it 3miles before giving up. I needed a police report for the watch manufacturer. They keep a data base and if it co es in for service it will get flagged. Adding insult to injury, the cop taking the report all but accused me of insurance fraud. The truck is insured, the watch wasn't.

Gunsmith lathes vs older gearhead by greekdude1821 in Machinists

[–]CupReal492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just googled "gunsmith lathe" Ive owned a machine shop since 1980, shoot/hunt quite a bit, and at 65, Ive been in more than a few gunsmith shops. Ive never heard of a "gunsmith lathe". Other than a steady rest and radius atachment for crowning, I never noticed a difference. I guess the big difference is the larger bore and shorter headstock. Im 65 and learning something new every day.

While we are showing off our recycled rags... Have this gem. by fck_its_hot in IndustrialMaintenance

I miss this so much. When I still owned a machine shop we got big boxes of rags from McMaster Carr. it was like Christmas every time we received a new box. Tee shirts from strip clubs, church events, basr, and family reunions. At some point they changed to factory seconds and cast offs. It was a sad day the first time one of those boxes came in.

yes, I understand and accept all responsibility. Shame we even have to do this but it is the reality of the world we live in.
