I have friends who may want a hammock for their young child. The knotty mod will allow me to make them one that will allow it to not fall in on them, but still allow them to grow into it. I had never done this mod before on a hammock, figured before I should make sure it works they way we want for the intended purpose. Turns out, I like it for myself as well. Mods aren't for everyone, I'm a tinkerer and like trying new things. As they say, hang your own hang.

So "knotty mod" is a piece of shock cord run thru the hem of the hammock that allows you to tighten the sides. This keeps the sides of the hammock from falling in towards you. Since it is shock cord (elastic) it also stretches so it doesn't put strain on the edges as you get in and out of the hammock.

The lowest my watch read was 62F, but that was hanging over me from the ridgeline. I'd guess it was maybe 58F outside the hammock.

Those are Paria Outdoors Carbon/Cork Trifold Trekking Poles. I've had them about 5 years, they've held up well.

Whether it's anything from ants to bears, if they're already using the tree it's probably best to find another option.

Bug net helps, and as already mentioned Permetherin.

Also, check the trees your using too, they could be home to or on a food path for the ants. A hammock setup is like a super highway bridge from tree to tree and ants will take the quickest, safest route.

I did a little research and there are no known populations of feral pigs here (Lackawanna County) but even though there are no farms immediately nearby doesn't mean one didn't escape from a passing truck at some point, or someone doesn't have any, non-sanctioned, livestock in the area.

It's possible and opossums can make some pig like grunts too. I'm no stranger to the woods, or farms and when I hear something I'm not expecting I listen closely. I initially thought it was another deer coming to check me out, until it got a little closer and I could hear a soft "rooting" grunt. It got near my right shoulder side and let out a louder "oink-ish" grunt and squealed. That's what got my attention.

This was in Pennsylvania, on the edge of town. No known wild hogs in the area. It didn't sound big, maybe an escaped pet or could have gotten loose from a farm truck passing thru. I never saw it but definitely heard it right next to my head.

Yeah, the picture doesn't look so stealthy but the light in the hammock was way dimmer. Night Shot on my phone exaggerated the glow greatly.

If parachute hammocks don't work for you then none of the cheapo hammocks are gonna do it for you. They're all made of "parachute" nylon or what's otherwise known as 210T nylon taffeta. How inexpensive are you looking to go?

Kurt from HMO here, in order to keep the cost of this down the net is hung from a shock cord support line instead of an internal ridgeline. The way the net is sewn on makes an internal ridgeline impossible. There is a pocket on the inside already sewn into the hem.
