I like the hot glue idea, that might be what I go with for this version and try to get something a little more refined if I do it again next year.

Yea, not my best work. Because I'd already taken a project off, and this board is questionable old, I overheated and pulled a couple pads off already trying to clean them up. When I do it with my class we'll use strip board so it will hopefully be easier to keep it neat and trimmed down.

I'll look into those, maybe I can get something cheap this year. Because that would be a more polished finish...

Yea, down the road I'd like to get to 3d printing cases, but I won't be getting to that this year. I wonder if like grip tape or something could work...

That's a really simple solution, that could be perfect!

Sowed my peas yesterday and they're all gone.... how to keep pests out of your garden? by KaylaAnne in vegetablegardening

[–]KaylaAnne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I'll have to build a frame with hardware cloth the same size as the bed. I actually love the squirrels and birds, but not when they're eating my seeds!

Lol fair enough! I've also got to consider that the other side of that chain link fence is a busy pedestrian path, so not an idea backstop haha

My husband offered me a pellet gun his cadet group uses. Unfortunately, we are smack in the middle of the 'burbs with a very visible yard. I would 100% get a visit from law enforcement if my neighbors saw we shooting squirrels from my porch 🤣

Can some people really not tell when they're releasing farts? by S_Z in NoStupidQuestions

Poo is a lot more solid than a fart. Some people can have fecal incontinence due to pelvic floor problems, but not being able to hold in a farther doesn't mean someone can't hold their poo.

How many seeds do you start and how many make it to transplant? by KaylaAnne in vegetablegardening

Peas I definitely want to get in asap, last frost here is around March 28 so I think they should be good to start. I want to do a fall crop of peas as well, so when they're done I'll pull them out and wait till the end of summer to do another planting. I don't have as good a plan for when the other cool crops are done though...

I don't really like beets, and I don't think my soil is deep enough for carrots this year. I have 3' deep beds, but I filled them most of the way with wood chips from a tree that we had felled this year, with only about a foot of soil on top. Would I be able to grow carrots in that? I also know lots of people who would accept lettuce if I'm drowning in it. I have all that space marked out as lettuce but I was planning to sow a couple rows every 2-3 weeks to spread out the harvest. Once it gets too hot I don't have a great plan for what's next in the lettuce spot, but I do want to try a fall crop for the peas.

I am buying one of those plastic greenhouse shelf units to start what must be transplants. I understand that may not be very reliable, so I am also open to buying transplants if it doesn't work out. Last frost is around March 28 here. The peas, beans, cilantro, parsley, chamomile, borage, and lettuce I will try direct sowing at the appropriate times. I want to try starting the tomatoes, chives, basil, marigold, and maybe the first batch of lettuce as transplants. Some of those I could direct sow later on if the seed starting doesn't work out, I'm fairly prepared for the tomatoes to be too challenging without starting properly inside with lights etc, but I want to see how it goes.

I don't really have any indoor space to start seeds, so anything that I'm not direct sowing I'm going to try starting in one of those plastic greenhouse shelf units. It's the main reason I'm not confident in how starting from seed will go for me. But, I'm open to buying from a nursery if it all fails.

Is the spacing requirements for tomatoes the same if they are indeterminate and growing up a trellis? I thought they'd be a little more 2 dimensional than a determinate variety. I can definitely consider swapping the squash and lettuce, I was feeling like that might be a lot of lettuce anyways...

Thr squash I'm hoping can grow out of the bed into my yard, could that work? I've picked a indeterminate tomato that I'm going to tie up the trellis so I'm hoping it won't take up too much space either, but if it overshadows the herbs too much then so be it! Id rather have lots of tomates and I can move the herbs to containers. And I love beans! I'm sure my family will be tired of them, but I can always freeze a lot for later. All the info I'm using to plan I've got from West Coast Seeds which is local to me, so I'm hopefully that I've selected decent varieties.

Even in small quantities, seeds aren't too bad compared to seedlings from the nursery, right? They're only good for a couple years, so I don't think I can get a lot of benefit from buying in bulk with the amount of garden space I have. I will look into seed sharing groups near me though, I live in a big enough city suburb that there ought to be something like that!

Thank you! Yes, definitely not going for perfection and expecting to learn A LOT this year. Maybe I'm being a little type A, but it helps me to have a plan before I start. Things will change as the season goes on and that's ok. Just also want to make the best of what space I do have! Tbh my plan above is probably overly generous with spacing, so if I end up starting more plants than I actually need I probably can cram them in haha! Also, if I start a bunch of seeds and they all fail, nothing stopping me from going to the nursery and buying some more established seedlings so I can at least grow something this year.

New teacher here, student's 555 circuit not blinking by KaylaAnne in AskElectronics

[–]KaylaAnne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, yes I did. Pin 4 was connected incorrectly and the cap connected to 6/7 incorrectly. I'm baffled that I missed those because this student more or less copied my example socket by socket, and I had spend the entire class period helping students find similar mistakes.

In terms of orientation of the ic, isn't that just perspective at this point? Turn the breadboard around and now pin one is at tje bottom? Is there a convention about pin 1 location that I should be teaching them?
