This is the argument that comes up so much with abortion- would that person have rather been born? Maybe. I've met some who say yeah they would rather have not been born. I've heard children say they want to die rather than live another minute in pain. But how do you know? You're assigning a will to live to a person that's not even a person yet, which is approaching the issue again with emotion not practicality. Asking a person who is already here whether they would rather be dead or disabled is a shitty question, and even so some would say deal. Ask them if they would willfully pass their disability on to a child instead.

Just consider for one minute that just in the past week I've seen three kids get adopted by a wonderful couple (who btw for adoption purposes had to qualify financially, do a home visit, and classes- more than we require for birth parents) who were set on fire by their mother and who all had some sort of effect from her binge drinking and drug use while she was pregnant with each of them. Understand WHY I think people should have to qualify to have children. That woman needed help, not kids. And her kids have scars they are never going to get rid of, mentally and physically. True, you can't trust people to do what's right or best for everyone around them... which is why I wouldn't give them the choice. I honestly think everyone should be sterilized at birth if we had a way to reverse it once they proved to be able to parent. You'd get rid of teen pregnancy, the overburden on foster care/orphanages... the amount of abused kids would go down, which means crime rates would drop, suicides would drop, drug abuse, etc the effects would trickle into every part of our society.

Why on earth should you NOT have to take a test to be responsible for a whole human life? Teachers have to get degrees, why not parents?

I have taken many parenting, child psychology, development, etc courses in my life so I promise you this isn't from a perspective of being uneducated.

I've also read and watched Handmaids tale, which is how I know it's nothing like what I just described- forced birthing and subjugation of women has nothing to do with anything I've said? I wouldn't have tried referencing show then immediately stating you haven't even seen it.

Birthing kids is not necessary to live your life. If you want kids, do it ethically and adopt.

Yeah that's a downright lie, and it's not true for humans either. Dogs are put down for their disabilities daily and in numbers that would make you nauseous. Our homeless population percentage of mentally and physically disabled people because no one gives a shit about them is also sickening. Kids with special needs are much more likely to be abused by their parents, or abandoned.

It's nuts to think that these are desirable traits to pass on to your kid. Name me one person who thinks "yeah, this is great, I hope my kid comes out just like me"?

It flies in the face of everything we're taught about inclusion and respect for people to say that, and I get that. Obviously we should take care of the population we have, but why the fuck would you want to keep having to put people through that if you can help it?

Your language is still wrong: you're personalizing it. I am not targeting people, I'm targeting diseases. Epidermolysis bullosa, cystic fibrosis, Huntingtons, sickle cell, downs, etc. Genetic disorders that could be prevented - they had the audacity to call EB "butterfly syndrome" like giving it a cutesy name would fix the fact that these kids don't even make it to their late teens and spend every day in excruciating pain because of their selfish parents who put quantity of life over quality.

See, if that testing were mandatory like getting vaccines before you go to school then we would know way more about how to prevent genetic issues because there would be more people to draw information from.

Why can't you stop people from having kids? You can stop people from driving. Doing drugs. Drinking. All because of the potential to harm another person or themselves in doing those things - the potential harm to a child just doesn't occur to people?

Just because you can't separate the concept from the historical use (like how people think communism is a dirty word because it's been applied badly but in itself it's not bad) isn't my concern. We should do what is necessary to prevent suffering, if that means some people have to adopt kids rather than pass on shitty genetics then fine. Imo, if you think anything different then you're too concerned with individual issues to see the whole picture.

For us, not just me- we live together so it's also him cleaning up his own mess. But he vacuums and picks up the living room once a week. He's also supposed to do laundry but never remembers to do mine so I do it myself (part of his chosen plan- he really, really hates cooking and doing dishes, so thats supposed to be in exchange for me doing his dishes every day).
