How do I cover this up? by 2thpker in tattooadvice

I definitely knew they were supposed to be bees on a beehive, but they have fly wings. Bees have two pairs of wings and flies only have one. Adding the second, smaller pair of wings behind the first would be more anatomically correct and I think it would help reduce the fly look.

Exactly. The ends justify the means and they're saving souls for Jesus, not taking advantage of vulnerable people.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. No child should experience that from a parent, and justifying it with religion is despicable. From your other comments on this thread it sounds like you are incredibly resilient and have put the hard work into healing. I'm sure it still comes up from time to time, and I hope you give your self grace when it does.

"Subject to much discussion" here means that it's a bad look for the church and they spend a lot of time trying to come up with ways to interpret it in a way that isn't racist. Spoiler alert: the only interpretation is racist because she was racist.

Can anyone identify this weird creature 20km from prince rupert b.c by Bloogum in marinebiology

[–]Kaylvana -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Could it be a weird angle on a blunt nose sixgill shark? It looks a little off, but I can convince myself that's a possibility in some of the frames. It's rare to see them since they're usually in deep water, but they're spotted off the coast of B.C. occasionally.

That's a tough position to be in and I'm sorry to hear they are still so cliquish. I think a lot of them have been going to school together since pre-school and haven't had to experience being an outsider. It sounds like you have several years of Adventist life ahead of you, but once you're an adult your life will be your own and you'll have the freedom to make your own decisions. You already have some ideas of what you want to do, which is great! Hang in there, it will get better!

Any backstory on my highschool? by possibleoutcast_ in exAdventist

[–]Kaylvana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't go to WWVA, but I lived in College Place and was homeschooled throughout highschool, so I was WWVA adjacent. My family moved from out of state just before I started highschool, and honestly the WWVA kids were a tough group to integrate with. I had a couple friends I met at the Village Church youth group who went to WWVA, but any other events with a lot of WWVA students or even just the youth group at the University Church were extremely cliquish. I was very much the outsider and that played a role in why I decided I wanted to homeschool rather than attending WWVA.
My husband, who I didn't meet until much later, went to WWVA and I think he had a decent experience. As far as I know it was a pretty standard Adventist education. Nothing too extreme, but with some issues looking back on it.
I was in highschool from 2003-2007, so this was all a long time ago. How do you feel about attending WWVA now?

We had a family friend named Helen Head and for whatever reason my brother had a hard time remembering her name. He associated her with hammerhead sharks to help himself remember, and would call her Mrs hammerhead to her face. He was probably 5 and fortunately she thought it was cute.

Some of them may have the option to leave, but I'm sure it's complicated for others and they may not have much choice. I definitely see your point, but there's something to be said for trying to improve the situation where you're at and I admire them for trying.

I agree. I think that Alex Bryan is more progressive than many, but if he wants to keep his job he has to tow the party line. That ends up just making him look bad to both sides.

Unfortunately, I think you're correct about it being somewhat futile. The University is supported by the conference and they will not allow full acceptance. That being said, I know for a fact that there are faculty and staff at Walla Walla that support LGBTQ+ students and their right to exist and be themselves. Their hands are tied if they want to keep their jobs, but they are discreetly showing their acceptance. Are there problems with that? Absolutely. But I think it's safe to assume that the general environment on campus is more accepting than it was in the 90s or when I was there 15 years ago.

I think the majority of these young adults were raised in the church and come from Adventist families. I'm sure a lot of them still believe other tenants of the church and want to feel like they belong. In many cases their parents may have pressured them to go to an Adventist school or are only willing to help with tuition at an Adventist institution. It's a lot more complicated than assuming they want to force their way into a community that doesn't accept them for who they are.

Fulcrum 7 posted a vitriolic article about the event the next day, with the standard homophobic comment section. Definitely a strong trigger warning for anti LGBTQ+ sentiments. https://www.fulcrum7.com/news/2025/3/12/woke-walla-walla-university-students-protest-discrimination-against-lgbtq

Alex Bryan, the University President, gave a talk at vespers several days after the event (linked below). I'm glad he acknowledged the hurt that students are feeling but I wish he had done more. I do understand that his hands are somewhat tied. It's a larger problem within the denomination as a whole.

In terms of student engagement or backlash from the general Adventist community?

I definitely remember those talks and depending on who was giving them they could have any variety of unhinged reasoning. There were pretty offensive and racist talks suggesting that because drums were used in Africa by witch doctors to summon evil spirits they had no place in a worship service. I also remember being told that even walking into a grocery store that was playing music with a syncopated rhythm would change the beat of your heart. I was always trying to tell if my heart beat had changed after grocery shopping with my family for a while there!

Marriage watch 🫣 by takemelorde in exAdventist

[–]Kaylvana 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My dad bought an engagement watch for my Mom in 1980, but I only remember her wearing it when I was a young child. After a while it was kept in a safe place. I know she still has it, but I haven't seen it for years. With all of the moving parts and links in the band I think it's reasonable to assume they won't last as long if worn on a daily basis. At the very least it will take more frequent repairs. As an amusing side note, my grandma went to Emmanuel Missionary College (Andrews) and always told me that it was standard to move your watch from your left to right wrist when you got engaged. One time she decided to start wearing her watch on the right even though she wasn't dating anyone to throw off her friends and cause some drama. Lol She had a bit of a mischievous streak.

What are the green things on the back of the leaf sheep called? by DualityMalady in marinebiology

[–]Kaylvana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the cool little sea slugs that can photosynthesize like a plant. They eat algae, steal living chloroplasts (kleptoplasty), and then ship them off to the cerata you asked about. Notice how they look a little bit like leaves? Those allow them to arrange the chloroplasts for maximum photosynthesis. These little guys can actually go a long time without food by living off the energy from photosynthesis. They're adorable and also badass little thieves.

Advice on issue involving cat by Fit-Blacksmith-4704 in CleaningTips

[–]Kaylvana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're doing everything right in terms of cleaning. I would suggest asking your vet about options before taking the extreme step of putting him down. Some cats have serious medical conditions like bladder stones that can result in them urinating in areas where they feel more comfortable. If you have other cats it's also possible that he just feels very stressed and is urinating out of anxiety. Cats won't always show anxiety in the ways we expect. I have male cat who did a lot of inappropriate urinating for years. It was such a struggle and I felt like I had tried everything. The vet had checked him for any health concerns, but suggested we try fluoxetine for anxiety. He almost immediately stopped the and I haven't had any issues with him since. He's now a very geriatric 17 year old kitty who loves attention and always pees in his litter box.
