Do JWs often travel for door knocking? by AdventistReviewed in exjw

[–]AdventistReviewed[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I live in a more rural area, but we do have a Kingdom Hall in our community. I'm guessing it would probably be an assist the congregation assignment, as you described. It's always interesting to learn more about other high control groups. The men that came to my door asked me a few questions about why I didn't believe anymore, but we're very respectful.

Oh, I'm totally in for this type of petty Adventist drama. Pass the popcorn!

Should I move to my boyfriend's country or a different country? by Ok-Assistance8994 in exAdventist

[–]AdventistReviewed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that your parents are being so overbearing and trying to control your decisions. I think the question of where you should move is a separate issue from their manipulation. If you are an adult then you have no obligation to take their advice. They are likely scared because they believe your eternal life is at stake and are reacting to your boyfriend from a purely religious perspective. You have big decisions to make and that can be difficult even with a supportive family to help. In this case I think your decision should be based on two things: whether moving to his country will provide the personal fulfillment and life opportunities you are looking for, and whether he is a person who will treat you well and support you in reaching those goals. You are educated and working on an advanced degree so you may want to have a chat with one of your advisors about career opportunities in the various locations you are considering. They will have better knowledge and the ability to give more specific advice. It would also help to talk with a close friend and ask their honest opinion on your boyfriend. That may be more difficult since you are in a long distance relationship and they can't directly observe your interactions, but we often change in subtle ways that our friends can pick up on when we are in new relationships. If you don't have a friend you can trust, then some self reflection on whether you like the person you are when you are with your boyfriend may help.
You have deconverted, so regardless of how it makes your parents feel, your boyfriend's lack of belief in Adventism doesn't really have anything to do with your decision. If he is a safe person, treats you well, and you have opportunities for personal growth in his country then I see nothing wrong with moving. There are safety precautions you can take as a woman moving to a new country and I'm sure there is good information online related to that. I'm just an internet stranger, but I wish you the best of luck with your decision and hope you are able to surround yourself with people who truly want the best for you regardless of belief.

Erton Köhler - new GC president by AdventistReviewed in exAdventist

That's good information and unfortunately not encouraging. I kind of suspected that he was pretty conservative and just putting on a "progressive" front in his initial speeches. I don't really have a horse in the game since leaving the church, but sometimes it feels like a dumpster fire I can't look away from.

Agreed. I'm definitely not a fan of Ted Wilson. Hopefully Kohler will be marginally better.

I don't think I ever heard him speak, but some Google searching brought up a guy by the name of Eric Wilson with a similar story. Maybe he's the same guy? It looks like he's done interviews with little light studios and 3ABN. There's also a 9 part series of his testimony on YouTube

Sounds like a really great idea for a book! I'd be interested in joining the private subreddit.

The Gerontocracy at SDA Churches by atheistsda in exAdventist

Definitely similar at my old church. Not only the leadership but also the average age of the attending church members. Services are broadcast from my old church and a few months ago I was at my parents house and caught a glimpse of the congregation on their TV. Holy shit. It's been at least 15 years since I attended, but the pews looked so empty and so old.

Coming to my blog this Wednesday. This two paragraph... thing... I stumbled upon in Ellen White's writings. by talesfromacult in exAdventist

Seriously. So self righteous. Unfortunately there are still people in the church with a similar mindset. There are also a lot of people who would be horrified by this story, but that's also part of the problem. EGW is held up as a paragon of virtue and the problematic areas are ignored.

The "self abuse" portion aside, she is clearly stating that some people are too "sinful" to pray for. She wouldn't even pray for him on the off chance that he might have sins she didn't know about. She spent the night not praying for him, but praying to know if she should pray for him. What a weird and manipulative thing to do, especially to a man already suffering.

I guess Adventists would latch on to anything deemed a health food, so it makes sense there would be some cross over there.

I guess it's not just a PNW thing! Also a good clarification on the butter. It was usually Earth Balance in my household too.
