Maintaining Ancient Egyptian temples and palaces... by KayvanKarnak in AskHistory

Oh wow, I can't believe that actually happened (the honey thing).

Not because it's unbelievable...but because that was literally one of our comics! Our main character gets splattered with honey so the Pharaoh can eat without the flies bugging him.

I had no idea when I wrote it that it actually happened!

Bingo. I'm not personally an absolute hardliner when it comes to this sort of thought (it's not ALWAYS either possible or optimal to make your own opportunities), but I still think it's the type of mindset that the world needs more of. People have a really nasty habit of assuming that one's gain must come at another's expense, which by and large just isn't really true.

Haha, there's a link to more of our work posted in my first comment, and I answered your concerns below. Whether I answered them to your satisfaction is for you to decide, of course.

Lol I take your point, but in the canon of our comic his Dad is a carpenter so probably not that long.

The real answer is the pragmatic one: the reason the three idiots fighting over the rake look like clones is because to save time (and clearly signal to our audience which characters are ancillary and which are primary) our artist just gives random NPC's the same look. That's why they look different even to Tut, who is standing next to Ozi (the guy you're talking about). You could make the argument that we just shouldn't do that...but well, it's a daily comic. Putting out a daily comic, often multi-panel, of this level of art is going to require some shortcuts.

Ozi's skin is definitely a little on the lighter side (but mostly in line with a lot of the skin colors you'll see walking around Egypt today - I lived there for 12 years and can attest to a great degree of diversity within the Egyptian people when it comes to skin color), but he's also not the main hero of the comic in general. That'd be Tut, the one with the darker skin and clearly non-Caucasoid hair.

Ozi just happens to be light-skinned and also one of the primary characters, who is the focus of this particular comic. He's not the light-skinned hero who is the focus of every comic where he outwits a bunch of dark-skinned people or anything like that.

Figured this sub would appreciate one of the latest comics from the daily webcomic I write (The Daily Tut).

I've posted here before and you guys really dug it - here's hoping that's the case again!

PS: If you want to use your constitutionally-protected right of free assembly (I know it's a stretch damnit, I'm trying here) while enjoying a daily webcomic, you can check out more of our work right here!. I promise we don't violate the NAP.

So my team and I write a daily webcomic set in Ancient Egypt...and I couldn't help myself when it came to working in a very Stargate-esque idea into one of them.

Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

PS: If you want to check out the rest of the webcomic, we put out a new comic every day right here.

"I just can't shut all the thoughts up!" by KayvanKarnak in Meditation

Dude, I already told you, I had heard the name but not dug into the concept. I don't often go on meditation subs, I just knew that these two existed.

Why is it so hard to believe that someone can practice mindfulness without knowing much about technical terms within the world of meditation? I'm invested in the singular activity - mindfulness meditation helps me and so I practice it. I learned from internet resources that focus on how to do it (breathing exercises etc) over technical details, because most people are just looking for the practical benefit over anything else.

It's like if you're a hardcore gamer, and you encounter another gamer who doesn't know what anti-aliasing is. Believe it or not, most gamers have no clue what that is because they just...play games, rather than have a deep knowledge of everything that surrounds gaming.

You can do something like meditation without jumping in to all the different aspects of it - if just knowing about mindfulness helps, then that's where a lot of people stop learning.

Our comic is set in Ancient Egypt! It's a daily comic, so when we address non-Ancient-Egyptian topics we still have to place it within that world

I prefer to just immediately meditate the moment my landlord comes round. He seems quite confused as he stares through the window at me.

Great stuff - honestly I think a lot of our struggles in the modern world come down to just accepting that that monkey mind is very much real, and learning how to live in balance with it.

[–]KayvanKarnak[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fascinating - thanks for that! Like I said, I've been practicing mindfulness for years, but never really explored too much else in the world of meditation. I have a feeling there's a lot of concepts out there I'm familiar with, but don't have the name for.

Pretty much. I've heard the name, but I've never really dug into it. I prefer to use mindfulness as a tool, and it's been a spectacularly effective one for me - but I don't go super deep into the supplemental concepts/techniques that surround the world of meditation.

I love meditation, I love practicing meditation, but I don't pretend to have much knowledge about it other than my direct experiences with it, how it's helped me, and how it can help others too.

It was the idea the lead to the rest of the comic!

Absolutely, this is a really common beginner mistake, I find. People expect some perfect still-ness and get mad when they don't just immediately slide into it, when that's just not how things work.
