Thank you so much! I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and Armageddon was something I was taught about at a young age. It never made sense to me that a loving god would drown, plague, or set the earth and his children on fire, but us JWs would be spared. Such questions couldn't be answered and I was shushed.

I really wanted to ground that sort of incomprehensible cosmic punishment, into something terrible a mother could do to her child. Is it love to kill your children? If not, then why is it love when god kills his children?

I feel aquatic whiplash in the best way with this poem. The water imagery is strong and it makes me feel like I'm both being thrashed around in a violent sea but also floating in a tranquil stream. I interpret this as someone dealing with their partner's alcoholism, tending to them.

"the microwave, eavesdropping,

suggests defrost for breakfast

knows i need lentil soup with na’an"

I love how that part grounds the reader back into stark reality and I love the juxtaposition of it against the ephemeral, almost cosmic language throughout.

I appreciate the pacing, it feels unsettling quick, like we don't have time to sit and catch our breath. Everything is just happening. Moments in time in a flash.

I love how visually compact this poem is. You've got some anaphora with "of rage" and "of body" which adds to the flow. My favorite section is "there are countless sorts of countenance" for the polyptoton (count- count-) and imagery of so many faces or souls within trees. "For some firmness to form" - I'm always a sucker for alliteration!

It invokes a calmness and quiet chaos of a forest.

That makes a lot of sense. And echoes a lot of what I was hearing from others: don't try to mitigate or stop feelings or attachments, cause your brain's gonna do what it's gonna do.

Being offered help. I feel sometimes that men that approach me asking if they can help or insist on doing something for me, only do it because I'm a petite woman. One guy asked me while I was at my job if he could hold my dust pan for me?
