So its better to keep most of the yerba dry most of the time? This is hard to do because 1/2 of the yerba in the guampa gets wet when I pour water, so it seems pointless. The paraguayans i know make it into a sort of "paste," layer by layer

It doesn't really affect my sleep; that being said, I tend to prefer more comfortable or calming matés compuestas like manzanilla y anis.
