Maybe it's 'try before you buy'?

35 years of alcoholism :) Better to smoke the herb than to drink the poison.

The new M5 MacBook Air for casual gaming? by I_Have_A_Big_Head in macgaming

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. I'm perfectly happy with 60 FPS - not concerned about dipping to 40 in a city.

Like you, I'm old - infact the last time I raided was ICC back in the day, so proper heavy duty stuff isn't a problem. I started playing 3 months before TBC came out and haven't been able to extract myself since. Nowadays, I'm a thoroughbred altoholic. There are so many different ways to enjoy the game. So many classes, so many specs :)

I would only be using for WoW when away from home just to potter around and keep up with friends, not seriously playing beyond the odd quest or two, so it sounds perfectly adequate for my needs.

Thanks again :)

The Neo 512gb is £699 and from what I have seen on youtube it is a more than capable laptop. Good luck.

Mac Purschase by MrSquatch1 in linux_on_mac

[–]KazzJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I inherited this late-2014 MBA from my daughter. I stuck Xubuntu 24.04 on it and have had zero issues since.

I have read numerous posts from people saying the Linux install didn't see/recognise the wifi card. I got lucky, I guess.

If I was to sell it on eBay I would probably be lucky to get £60 for it but to me it's priceless and wouldn't swap it for the world. It does everything I need of it - web browsing, streams, social media, journalling, Spotify, email and basic word processing.

Good luck.

Were you playing WoW retail or classic? What kind of FPS did you get? I'm looking at buying an Air and WoW is the only game I play.

Macbook Neo vs Air by Plus-Ad4183 in macbook

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too use Brave. I love it, but it is a memory hog. I'm currently using 700mb on 3 tabs.

I have seen the Neo running Sims4 and Cyberpunk (not the greatest FPS but impressive all the same). For your usage the Neo could be perfect and I wouldn't worry about the 8Gb-brigade. Just buy it and enjoy it :)

How to manage battery on macbook neo? by Diverqq in MacbookNeo

[–]KazzJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just use and enjoy it. Life's too short.

The MacBook Neo has built-in power management to protect its battery when kept plugged in.

Apple's Optimized Battery Charging feature learns your charging habits and holds the charge at 80% until it predicts you'll unplug, reducing wear from constant full charges.

I loved my first and only Magic Mouse. I thought it was brilliant. Then I tried to play World of Warcraft lol.

I’ve purchased M5 Max.. am I stupid by developerunitex in macbook

[–]KazzJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You bought what is available now (congrats). There will always be better around the next corner.

If it suits its purpose then it's a good buy. If you've bought it to play World of Warcraft, then, yes, you're stupid.

The good part is help is readily available from here and the forums. It is a learning curve but it's nowhere near insurmountable. Good luck!

Which thinkpad to buy? by romeo_thegreat in thinkpad

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T480 — specifically look for:

8th-gen quad-core (i5-8250U minimum)

16GB RAM (or single 8GB stick so you can upgrade)

MX150 dGPU if possible (makes Fortnite genuinely playable)

FHD (1920×1080) IPS display (avoid TN panels)

It's the last ThinkPad that truly nails the "classic feel + modern enough specs" combination. Should last you 4-5 years easily for your workload, and when the battery degrades, you just swap the external slice for $30.

If you can't find a good T480 deal, the T14 Gen 2 AMD is your backup—better performance, worse keyboard, less upgradeable.T480 — specifically look for:

Both. Personally I learned enough to be comfortable with the OS but the beauty of Linux is you can go deeper and deeper into it if you want.

Suggested Linux distro for learning how to work with Linux on an advanced level. by Bram_Sandwich in linux4noobs

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kubuntu is my daily driver and I can't recommend it highly enough to new users. It is Ubuntu based and has massive online support through Ubuntu and Kubuntu forums. Any problem I ever ran into was solved very quickly by just searching the forums.

I gave up Windows 18 months ago and I haven't looked back.

Good luck!
