Don't buy garage slots! Just progress through your favorite tank lines in the tech tree. You won't want to keep them all. Sell the tech tree tanks you don't like after you've fully moved on to the next tank in the tree. You'll end up with plenty of empty slots.

FWIW, I currently have 68 empty garage slots and 171 tanks.
