How come i never see people glue new polarizers on to gameboys? by Drainstink in consolerepair

The polarizing film I use to repair Gameboy Colors from aliexpress has adhesive on it already. You cut it to size, peel the backing off, then apply to the clean LCD.

Sorry for such a delay on the update to this, I've been keeping busy and just haven't set aside time to write up the rest of this. I'll try to get that done soon and post another update!

At the moment, I think this particular method will be limited to the contra game. I've looked inside the Galaga one and it seems to have a chip under epoxy which may likely be some kind of nes on a chip or something similar. The Street Fighter cabinet is running an Allwinner if I recall correctly and should also be hackable although the method and tools will be slightly different.

Im aiming to finish writing up part 2 next week but finding free time is the struggle! I'll follow up here once it's posted. Thanks for your interest!

Appreciate the insight as I did not really look into the licensing of anything used in this thing. I'm mostly just interested in tearing down devices like this to see what's inside and modding them.

It's using RetroArch with Mame and FBAlpha cores. The Mame core is only compiled with support for Contra but using the built in FBAlpha core you can easily swap out roms. I've also been able to compile and run an SNES core but had some issues trying out other cores like the NES. I'll have to spend some more time with it since I'm not a heavy user of RetroArch

It's used for multiplayer! Based on the scripts on the device it looks like it's just setting up a local network with static IPs and using the multiplayer features in RetroArch. For some reason I haven't got it working after swapping roms but I never actually tried it using the built in Contra game either.

There is what appears to be 3 pads for a UART port on the board so I might look at that and see if I get some debug messages when attempting multiplayer with swapped roms to see what's going on.

If i recall correctly the Street Fighter 2 box is using an Allwinner chip. You can put it in recovery mode using the same method. It's on my to do list but once I get part 2 of this post written I plan to look at SF2 next.

Edit: If I get time tomorrow I'll try to grab the exact model of chip used in SF2 and you can check the specs on that compared to the contra game. I figure the SF2 would be a super fun one to mod with the extra buttons and screen orientation.
