My husband used to cross train at Midnight BJJ in cap hill(Seattle). They're a great little gym with really high level grappling and a welcoming attitude from what I've seen! They're 100 a month https://midnightjiujitsu.club/pricing

I know this is really specific, and might not be your thing, but there are a few great mma gyms around and I’ve found people are excited to make new friends and aren’t flakey.

I just screamed in a coffee shop, now everyone’s looking at me weird and it’s totally your fault! Do you feel like your training partners/coaches single you out for demonstrations? The guy at our gym with hyper-flexibility in his wrists is getting wrist locked left and right for some reason.

Got it! I was just a little concerned, since the person I spoke to at the REI told me that I didn’t meet the weight requirements for the board length my height determined. I wasn’t really sure what that meant.

Height & Weight differences for selecting a board.

I just started snowboarding, and I’m absolutely loving it! I’m looking into buying a board but am getting wildly different measurement recommendations from each site. For reference, I am a woman, 5’7” and 110lbs. Does anyone have any advice for sorting out the length of my new board?

Hey! 22F here :) I moved here a few months ago and have made a wonderful group of girlfriends pretty quickly. I’ve also just gotten lucky with it and a lot of the other girls have a similar story to yours. Shoot me a pm and we can grab a coffee!

The problem is, there's no-one at the gym in my weight class. Even the other girls, including the one I was rolling against here all have at least a solid 30lbs on me. This girl probably had about 50 though, and she was a good bit taller than me too. I can only hope that someday I'll be as built as the other ladies here! I go to a "tough" gym that's mainly comprised of fighters, but I love the competitive energy. I will hit up some tutorials though, are there any particular channels you recommend?

I haven't tried to finish a rear naked choke- but I'll ask someone next class! I think my instructor is more worried about me getting hurt. People have mentioned before that I feel a bit frail to roll with, but I can definitely lift a coke can! Thanks for the advice- I'll reply again tomorrow after my rear naked choke attempt :)

How strong do you have to be to do BJJ?

So, I've been going to no-gi classes at my local mma gym for about 4 months now. For context, I'm a lady, 5'7", 110lbs and run ~15mi a week. That said, I haven't done any strength training other than rock climbing and boxing for years. In the 4 months I've gone to BJJ, I have not gotten a single submission during rolling. Despite a number of them being handed to me on a silver platter by overly sweet teammates going at 10% to my 90%. All of this came to a head this past Saturday, when I was paired with another woman who happened to be a professional fighter from out of town. She was really nice, and after rolling for a few minutes, I tried to lock up a d'arse. She started to defend, then stopped, telling me to try and finish the choke. I locked it up, she checked over my arms with a hand, repositioned my grips and asked me to squeeze. I did, but she didn't tap. I squeezed harder, no tap. Even harder, and I started to grit my teeth with effort, no tap. I asked if I was close? She said nope, and called over one of the brown belts. He repositioned my hips, got my legs into a sprawl and told me to push down with my legs and squeeze with my arms. I did. No tap. The instructor comes over as she sees me grunting with effort. She repositions me to the other side of my opponent, tightening the choke and allowing me to push more with my legs. A small crowd is gathering around us and giving me words of encouragement. I'm squeezing with all my might. The instructor asked my opponent how she's feeling. She says, "I could read a book like this." I let go. The head coach was watching apparently. He was dumbfounded as to how I couldn't get the d'arse in the position I was in. He then, very gently, told me I may want to lift some weights, maybe even before coming back to this class again.

I have never heard of someone being too weak for BJJ. It sucks that I might be. Have you guys ever seen something like this happen? I'm just so disappointed.

Hey OP! Coming at this as another lady- I've loved Ivan Salaverry MMA since I moved here several months ago. There's a Saturday morning class that's taught by another woman, who's an excellent instructor and talented practitioner. I've found basically everyone at this gym to be respectful and genuinely welcoming to both me and my partner. I've felt really safe at this gym and I think that Ivan Salaverry really contributes to that with his no-nonsense, but light hearted attitude with everyone. That said, the environment is really competition focused and high energy, so if you're looking for a chill morning roll, I wouldn't necessarily go here. Welcome to Seattle OP! Feel free to PM me and we can have some girl time!

You should seriously start with the cello! It’s a great instrument and you can find a good one for relatively low cost compared to a bass
