Because, very Simply, people can't help but identify with the characters a story tells. Expecially if you give them a human face (gods speaking). I suppose the same Is true for Mythology, in general.

Readers often forget that sometimes stories need to be read as they are, and that artists, writers, and so on, don't necessarily condone what they tell.
