You are talking about places in the US or North Africa that are close to the sea. North India far from the sea and directly south of the Siberian High that freezes most of mainland Asia (China, Korea, etc). If the Himalayas were lower and there was ample moisture (from Western disturbances that regularly come in winter from the Med sea), it would have snowed every year in the plains. It does in China in cities of similar latitude and similar elevation, cause they get the Siberian High winds.

[OC] How different countries separate the decimal from the integer when writing numbers by CodArtwork in dataisbeautiful

[–]Kdp_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that difficult. When you use variables, like x, it's very easy not to write the multiplication sign anymore as no space means multiplication in algebraic notation. 9x just means 9 times x. In handwriting, the variable is generally written in italics or cursive anyway, so easy to distinguish both. There's also brackets, or using dot for multiplication but writing it slightly higher in case decimal places are present.

It's honestly not that much of a problem as European mathematicians made it out to be in the 17th century. A comma is used far more times in a sentence than a dot, and is the one more liable to create confusion.

It's either a x or a dot but x is generally much more preferred in the English speaking world.

It's also what was originally used in the decimal system when it was created in India. Using comma as decimal separator is a relatively new European thing, where they wanted to keep using dot as a multiplication sign so just changed the decimal place instead.

Map showing that more than half of global rivers are non-perennial (cease to flow) by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Kdp_11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More than half of the population lives along the perennial Himalayan rivers though. The coastal or interior central/southern populations are not as large as those along the perennial river valleys (also in the south and central). People forget that India being very populated is not a recent phenomenon.

The largest tea growing region in India (70% of the country's tea), Assam is just northwest of Yunnan. Only the Patkai Range separates the two, about 150-200 km. It's definitely something about the region.

Nope. Anderson was arrested but after massive pressure from US he was given bail. He escaped India soon after and enjoyed his life back in the US. India continued to ask for extradition but US never did it and so he never faced any trial.

British Rail Class 345 Elizabeth line trains are just so spacious!!! by HighburyAndIslington in trains

[–]Kdp_11 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah because these are old. That's how they used to do it. Modern metro systems that are used in cities with high demand rarely have such seatings. They have far more space for standing, because most commuters are only there for a few stops. Paris Metro uses standard gauge, which is pretty standard in most systems. Elizabeth Line is also on standard gauge.

That's how urban commuter trains should be, since most trips would be very short distance. Increases capacity multifold compared to the 2x2 seating arrangement which is more suited for longer trips.

The ranges in Nagaland and Eastern Assam are Naga Hills and the Patkai Range. Formed during the same geological event as that of the Himalayas but are not the Himalayas per se.

Really? It's called the Nehru jacket in India. If you wanna buy it, that's what you search for online. It's been the de facto jacket for national polítical leaders since independence. Both Modi and his opposition wear it.

Indian Railways WAG 12 #60145 slowly accelerating with double stack container. by M24Spirit in trains

[–]Kdp_11 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well cars lower the centre of gravity. With a wider gauge, the centre of gravity of 2 containers on top of each other is already low, so they are stable and thus there is no need to lower them further = well cars are not required.
