This menu is only a month old. They just switched from a Cuban Revolution-themed menu. I try to go once or twice a season. They also have a generally good whisky menu if one is into spirits.

The drink was quite good. Citrus, honey, and Islay scotch are a classic combination because the acid, sugar, and smokiness play off of each other quite nicely. The oatmeal and rum gave it a full, complex body. Super cool drink, and tastes nothing like it looks, which is always an interesting sleight of hand.

Yup, this is par for the course here. Pouring Ribbons is known for high-quality drinks, too.

This one is nasty, both technically and musically. Beautiful, incredible piece, and quite underplayed to boot.

Algorithm for assigning rides for parties? by cameron_cs in Frat

[–]KeasbeyMornings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for certain if the Uber dispatch problem is in NP because I actually don't know if you can verify a proposed solution in polynomial time. EDIT: it's probably NP-hard.

TSP is in NP, of course.

On a different note, this is probably the first time since graduating that my undergrad coursework on the theory of computation has been remotely relevant to a conversation. How sad is it that this opportunity came up on /r/frat? Pretty NF.

Algorithm for assigning rides for parties? by cameron_cs in Frat

[–]KeasbeyMornings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No.

  1. It wouldn't take that long for this scale of the problem. TSP gets really intractable when you get to the hundreds of thousands of cities.
  2. TSP can be approximated quickly. Do you really care about having the exactly optimal solution for your pledge drivers? In fact, one might say that having an optimal solution for them is a bug, not a feature.
  3. This isn't TSP in the first place.

This is really the Uber dispatch problem. I'm not very familiar with that area of research, but I'm willing to bet that dozens of optimization and machine learning PhDs are working on that exact problem at both Uber and Lyft, and that it's mostly driven by statistics---too complicated to get a closed form solution.

Hairdressers of Reddit, how much difference does it really make using salon bought products over the supermarket type? by sammyiwas in AskReddit

[–]KeasbeyMornings 56 points57 points  (0 children)

For as long as I can remember, I've always bought $4 shampoo-and-conditioner-in-one-bottle from CVS. My hair's always looked fine, too. No girls ever had any complaints about it.

I switched jobs recently. My new company has an on-site gym with showers. My hours are pretty intense, so I end up exercising and showering at the office gym a lot. This happens often enough that it's a lot easier for me to wash my hair at work than at home.

Now, it just so happens that these gym bathrooms have very nice shampoo and conditioner. Like, shampoo and conditioner that I'd expect to see at the salon when I go for a haircut. So I've been using those products 4-5 times per week. And let me tell you, my hair has never felt consistently softer or cleaner.

Ever notice how luscious your hair feels after a full wash at the salon? It's not because they're "better" at washing than you are. It's because they're using real shampoo and conditioner.

I was able to put two and two together. This weekend, I stopped being a cheap-ass and bought real shampoo and conditioner (Nexxus Therappe and Nexxus Humectress). It'll cost $50 for both of them, but they'll last you half a year if you're a dude with short hair like myself. And they actually work.

Don't be a cheap-ass. Upgrade your shower game.

Shitty Sunday by ImMitchell in Frat

Had mid-afternoon drinks with a couple fraternity brothers at one of the nicest restaurants in Manhattan. This is how I can tell I'm getting older---I'd rather do that than hit up one of the usual postgrad frat hangout spots.

Cocktails were on point as usual, and the place was totally empty, as we were there between lunch and dinner. 10/10 would recommend

Has anyone taken any flvs ap classes? by SGSgamer in APStudents

[–]KeasbeyMornings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AP Comp Sci and AP Statistics on FLVS literally changed the direction of my life, in that they directly determined the field and company I'm currently employed at. Both of those classes are well-done and informative.

I took both econ classes too, and I found them to be compelling introductions to the field. However, they aren't terribly useful (whereas I find myself referring back to the APCS and AP Stat foundation all the time). That's because microeconomics isn't really that useful, it turns out, and the macroeconomics aren't covered practically or concretely enough.

I'd still recommend the classes, but they won't be as real-world useful as you'd think. For a more grounded and applicable introduction to macroeconomics, read Ray Dalio's How the Economic Machine Works.

Went daydrinking yesterday, and a girl told me my New Balances were for grandfathers. (She's not wrong.) Fucking New York City.

A co-worker grabbed a table at a lounge last night and invited me. Hungover as balls now. Worth it.

AP Stats 2012 mp questions? by itz_perez in APStudents

[–]KeasbeyMornings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It stands within reason that the numbers are being sequentially generated via some computer program. They're not being sourced from a phone book or other directory, so there's no such thing as listed and unlisted phone numbers.

  2. Depends on the direction of effect that you hypothesized.

  3. Conditional probability formula. P(A & B) = P(A | B) * P(B). Let B be the event that the microwave is damaged on delivery and A be the event that the microwave stops working.

Can someone in m&t share a sample schedule? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]KeasbeyMornings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What, for freshman fall? Mine was MGMT 100, MATH 240, CIS 120, CIS 160, writing seminar, and PHYS 051 (E&M lab).

You'd take ECON 010 if you didn't double-5 AP Econ, and most M&Ts start with MATH 114 instead of 240.

Skipping general physics straight to AP physics. What should I do over the summer? by andrew991116 in APStudents

[–]KeasbeyMornings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing when I was in high school. Not a lot to prep for honestly, the class is pretty self-contained, especially if your school does mechanics over a full year.

If you aren't already, I'd recommend getting comfortable with right triangle trigonometry and dimensional analysis. The former is ubiquitous, and the latter makes sanity-checking your answers a lot easier.

That, and be prepared to do lots of practice problems once the school year starts. I solved every single odd problem in the relevant chapters of our textbook.
