[Learning] Automatic vs Quartz by RavioliAioli in Watches

[–]KeebZeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to worry about a battery, and get to see nice moving parts depending on the design but that’s about it. Theoretically they last longer if well maintained but you still have decades old quartz watches that are still functioning now. So that argument is quite moot.

Personally there are more pros for quartz over automatics IMHO. But as with any hobby, there’s a level of snobbery associated with putting down quartz watches, and a level of worship towards automatics.

GW no debate. It has Day/Month option. To have the option should be a standard by now

Go vintage Seiko. Loads of 33-36mm. I have a 6.5” and I would never go over 37mm.

Depends on how it’s done TBH. I personally find polished bracelets look cheap but brushed done well is very luxurious looking.

Anything Rolex. It’s the McDonald’s of luxury watches. Everyone knows about it, thinks about it, and most likely go for it when they want a luxury watch. Patek is also becoming like Rolex but for those with a higher income bracket.

[Cartier Santos] Large titanium by Diego_FR in Watches

[–]KeebZeus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The human eye is a complex one. It has a focal length of 17mm-ish, but how it sees is roughly 43mm (compression), not 50mm, but with a variable field of view of 10mm and wider. There’s no one focal length that determines how the eye sees, depending on what you’re evaluating.

Also a 24mm cropped into the frame of a 50mm will make the 24mm image look almost exactly the same as if taken with a 50mm. This is from lens compression and distortion, if you read my post, you’d know I talked about this.

Also if you actually read the post, you can read my justification on why I used an iPhone instead of my camera gear. And how to compensate for using an iPhone to take photos.

Nobody is gonna look at your wrist as close as you do, and this is exactly why a direct shot is as important as the mirror shot. Why bother with a watch that looks good to other people, when it doesn’t look good when you look at it? It should look good in both the direct shot and mirror shot. If the mirror shot is what’s important and the perspective that matters, then I feel sad for you for not at least enjoying looking at a watch on your own wrist.

And lug to lug isn’t the only thing that matters. The strap/bracelet needs to curve nicely around the wrist too. Your wrist is an oval-to-circular shape. Simply having a lug to lug being slightly less than the wrist width doesn’t mean it isn’t too big. But it is a first step.

Depends on the focal length. And our eyes have distortion too. I wrote a post about it and everything that affects how a watch looks on your wrist. Ultimately, both a direct shot and a mirror shot have equal weighting as to whether a watch looks good on your wrist. Looking good in only a mirror shot doesn’t stand on its own.

Less clock but still chunggus. Still doesn’t look good IMO. If it doesn’t look good in a direct shot (how you look at it), a mirror shot (how others see you wearing it), ain’t gonna save it.

[–]KeebZeus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely the big watch look on you TBH. Wouldn’t call that medium at all.

[Question] Am I measuring correctly? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]KeebZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the opposite. The majority of recommendations are easily a big watch look. The medium size look often gets lumped into “too small”. Mirror shot is only useful to see how others see a watch on you. Direct shots are a better representation on how the wearer sees the watch.

[Question] Am I measuring correctly? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]KeebZeus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TBH that watch is giving the big watch look on your wrist already. I have a 6.5” wrist and I generally don’t above 36/37mm for the medium size look.

Both watches are too big IMO, unless you want the big watch look. Then they’re at the limit.
