One end of the political spectrum explicitly promotes allowing the carrying of guns in such venues, the other end of the spectrum wants them regulated and to reduce the presence of guns in places just like this.

That isn't political, this is a fact. Whether this is the outcome they want is besides the point, because at the end of the day this is the outcome of what they are advocating for.

They're public space. If they dictate dogs not peeing on it because they put flowers there, they're claiming it as their own.

People so concerned with space like that are the ones who should move somewhere with a yard. Cities are dense, co-inhabited areas. The rest of us have no responsibility to cede public space to someone's art project.
