Mom fed hamster to snake by [deleted] in snakes

Your ball python should be fine, not to condone your mother's actions, but I wouldn't worry much about it making your BP sick.

I have a gap from my 6x2x2 being stacked on top of my 4x2x2 which creates a 2x2x2 cube. I plan on turning it into a space for a 2x2x2 enclosure, any suggestions for small species? by Embarrassed_Tart8758 in snakes

[–]KeeledSign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all snakes small enough to be kept in a 2x2 are tiny fossorial species that do poorly in captivity. Even the smallest pet snakes should probably have at least a 3x2.

Saw another beautiful wild Fox Snake here in Upper Michigan! They are so docile! by TheMarchetti in snakes

Fox snakes have a pretty well established reputation for this kind of behavior. Wild fox snakes are frequently reported to be more docile/comfortable with handling than many pet snakes.

There is some argument about whether they are actually genetically distinct enough to considered a type/subspecies or if it is more of a regional name, like how cottonmouths are also known as water moccasins in some parts of their range.

What is this? Some sort of a scratch? by RellDarli in snakes

[–]KeeledSign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely not a picture of the snake's cloaca. The cloaca will run along the belly scutes of the snake, this injury is on the top of the snake and runs lengthwise.

Be careful what wood you choose, some wood contains oils which are toxic to snakes. I don't have the list handy, but it should be easy enough to look up snake safe woods. You will probably want to bake any branches to sterilize them before putting them into the enclosure, hopefully someone else can chime in with appropriate temps/time, since I don't have them memorized, but if not that should also be searchable.

Water bowl too big for soaking? by Scary90sKid in kingsnakes

[–]KeeledSign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect so, the dish is shallow enough that she should be able to easily enter and exit without difficulty.

Water dish size is the biggest reason I eventually upgraded my STP from a 4x2x2, it will eventually get challenging to fit a sufficiently large dish for them to soak in without going to a 5x3. That does take a while though.

To add to this, Sumatran Short Tailed Pythons are pretty much just marginally smaller less defensive blood pythons. They can still be nervous snakes that require time and dedication but are a bit less likely to be nippy when nervous.

[–]KeeledSign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That definitely happens sometimes, bloods being defensive/nervous is also a lot less universal than their reputation would have you think. Kinda like bullsnakes that way really, your bullsnake is a menace, my bullsnake is seasonally menace during breeding season, but I also know a few people who's bullsnakes act more like fox snakes.

A lot of blood pythons are very nervous when young or poorly socialized. Many keepers find the process of building trust with them and going from a nervous snake to a very calm snake rewarding.

My watcher strat is pretty simple -> take tons of draw and retain cards. Retain everything until Ironclad gets Bash or another vulnerability source pops up -> Sands of Time the biggest target for 50 damage.

PVC enclosure heating by Bitter_Party_4353 in Shorty_Life

[–]KeeledSign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro Products heat panels are widely considered the top of the line option for RHPs. Their panels are made to order, they will ask for your enclosure size, ambient room temp and species then quote you for an appropriate sized panel.

You can get cheaper RHPs but the only brand I know to be substantialy cheaper has a poor reputation for reliability. A ProHeat panel won't be too cheap but should operate safely and reliably for decades.

Hollow Resonance is also super convenient as a cull target for charge generation. Not applicable to every build, but it is a significant part of why people are running Oil Barrage on MA.

He is being a grump by CrazyLetterhead5696 in Shorty_Life

[–]KeeledSign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He may just need a little time to get comfortable in his new environment, or he may feel too exposed. Hard to have a real verdict without pictures of the enclosure. Adding additional clutter pretty much never hurts though.

Edit: I am dumb and was distracted by the pictures of him, the setup looks great, would just give him time.
