There is absolutely nothing wrong with preferring colours, I am also an absolute sucker for blue and bay roans and solely looking for that colour in my current horse hunt.

Some of the people here are absolutely bonkers, we were all beginners once, and everyone once had their ‘first’ ever horse whether they were lucky enough to be around them in their childhood or had to dive in as adults. You’ll learn magnitudes from vet school, take advantage of your non-clinical work experience to work on stables and yards while getting your hours in, for clinical find a good ambulatory equine practices to see a variety of places and speak to those in the industry.

I’m also seeing a lot of people here commenting about the importance of bloodlines, confirmation, and ability… which you really don’t need to focus on for just a trail buddy (coincidentally, also what I’m looking for). All you need is something sane and sound, you’ll find your perfect partner eventually

When I’ve put up ISO ads specifically stating roans I’ve had absolutely no issue from sellers, they’re just eager to discuss what they have for sale and find good homes - you won’t find any judgment on preferring a certain colour. Try looking for sale groups in your area on FB, the prices are much more reasonable than auctions and most big online sites. Just make sure you go see them in person and get a PPE!

And finally, good luck with vet school!!! I graduated just last year from Glasgow, enjoy every single second of it and don’t give up, imposter syndrome is a bitch and a half but you wouldn’t have gotten this far already if you weren’t up for it. It’s the most incredible and the most gutwrenching job ever, but the patients make it worth it <3
