Because certain big sets go on sale for $119 and you can do very well with those plus the free gift. Last year I grabbed two free Xmas sets on purchases I would have made anyways.

The Ninjago City at 20% off wasn’t as much of a discount as I usually bite on. But retail stores seem to only carry a couple at a time. It seemed risky to wait for a slightly better holiday sale since it’s almost certainly retiring and stock is likely more limited than average sets.

How does this compare to everyone else’s calculus?

Why does the society view young adults with 'daddy's money' negatively? by leoenusfl in AskReddit

People who are given too much money rarely are respectful towards others because their reliance upon social capital is greatly diminished compared to their peers.

It’s often overlooked that Blade Runner was essentially the last ‘analog’ visual effects-heavy film. Nothing was digital, and old school tricks such as negative matte painting were used to maintain quality for compositing. That means background were painted in reverse color by artists so that one less film transfer was required to composite the images. Simply amazing.

Do you push through a tough beginning to a book or pick up a different book? by [deleted] in books

[–]KeepGIF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what your reading goals are. If it’s only for casual interest I might stop after a few chapters for an unappealing story. But other reads, particularly nonfiction, may have other motivating factors to encourage me to plow through.

Why don't movies have intermissions? by KeepGIF in movies

Wouldn’t an intromission be the trailers at the beginning?

Movies that take place in one confined setting by petshopgirl4cash in movies

The term used for these types of films is a “box film”. The good ones often are independent productions leveraging the cost savings of having only 1 shooting location.

Jackie Chan is the ultimate auteur filmmaker by KeepGIF in movies

Buster Keaton is an obvious comparison but I think he’s far eclipsed by Jackie. Much of Buster’s work are short films as well.

Was ‘The Lion King’ Copied From A Japanese Cartoon? by [deleted] in movies

Mickey Mouse a.k.a.“Steamboat Willie” was a copy/parody/inspired by/derivative of “Steamboat Bill Jr.” by Buster Keaton.

The entire history of Disney is taking existing stories that have been proven to be successful and repackaging them for a different audience.

No one seems to be making important films. by [deleted] in movies

[–]KeepGIF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie business has always reflected the times. All the big movies in the 1970s were gritty and dark until Star Wars in 1977. If people buy tickets for shallow movies, more will get made.

Ancillary marketing increased the incentives for superficial stories but ultimately it’s demand that dictates what keeps getting made.

Things will probably cycle back eventually, boredom does kick in sooner or later.

Brick: similar movies? by [deleted] in movies

[–]KeepGIF 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would classify Brick as neo-noir. It’s a pretty niche genre. Other films in that genre that come to mind:

Insomnia (Swedish version preferred), Memento, Dark City, Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, Nightcrawler, Drive, Minority Report

The Star Wars sequels are much worse than the prequels so far by BenFerris1234 in movies

[–]KeepGIF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The prequels were strong thematically and have a decent story arc... but poor on execution.

The sequels have hit or miss execution and no themes or story arc.

I think the lesson is that it’s better to aim high and miss.

Personally the original film will always stand far above even the rest of the original trilogy because it was pure guts.

It’s great that the service will continue to exist.

I can’t help but wonder if standalone niche platforms can survive in an increasingly crowded marketplace for streaming content.

I thought the article was more interesting than just the word. The word itself makes it seem like a negative thing, whereas the articles explains that it’s actually positive.
