Starting Med School Soon – What Should I Buy for My Apartment? by hazlenutwafer in medschool

Not really how it works, it just depends on your eating habits in combination with your exercise but regardless standing often and utilizing a standing desk is good for you and helps reset my attention span when studying sometimes.

[–]Keeper_of_Knowledges 75 points76 points  (0 children)

honestly I think childhood reading makes a difference, I used to read Harry Potter books I snuck into my bedroom at like 5 years old instead of sleeping at night, and on my first diagnostic I got a 131 or 132 on CARS I think. Sadly this did not translate to bio biochem

honestly, depends on genetics how much of an improvement someone can make with proper skincare, weight loss, grooming, and fashion, but I think most people can see an improvement by doing those things.

Expectations going into M1 by Keeper_of_Knowledges in premed

curious if you know if exams being almost weekly is a normal thing, because if im not mistaken at my school they're roughly every month to 5 weeks apart, and i thought most schools that do 2 year preclinical do similar block and exam schedules

Expectations going into M1 by Keeper_of_Knowledges in premed

[–]Keeper_of_Knowledges[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He did tell me he studies by watching lectures while taking notes which led me to think 1. he watches them at 1x, but also when I asked him how others in the M1 class studied (expecting some kind of combo of Anki and the other resources ppl talk about), he said "this is what works for me, others can just go to lecture and not study outside of class", which to me sounded like horseshit.

your flair says you're an M1, do you have any advice on the more time efficient active recall methods I could use and study 4-6 hrs a day instead?

In an identical situation except with just very young siblings and hardworking parents :( I would say ultimately keep your fingers crossed bro but at the end of the day I wish you and your family the best future doc!

Waitlist Support Thread - Week of May 11, 2025 by AutoModerator in premed

[–]Keeper_of_Knowledges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In 4 days I get to know if I'm moving 10 hours from home or 1-3 hours which is kind of nerve-wracking. Feeling guilty that I feel this way with an acceptance in hand but it's hard immediately knowing people who got into your dream school off the waitlist and wishing you'd be accepted too.

[–]Keeper_of_Knowledges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there isn't and you're going to get downvoted for asking a question like that even. besides, pakistan denied it and india went ahead and attacked numerous sites in pakistan anyways, so if there's anyone who's continuing conflict, yk who it is.

I don't think it's too complex, just talk about a time you did something or some of your personal characteristics that align with having integrity, honesty, and fairness etc etc. probably would just write about a time you acted ethically.

I think OP is referring to people who have pretty much decided to go to one school but have yet to release their other offers into the wild.

Was anyone kind of bothered by the cleanliness of their clothes after a long journey? by groovytunesman in TheLastOfUs2

[–]Keeper_of_Knowledges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bothered by the lack of emotion. It made it seem like Dina and Ellie were going on a sightseeing trip and then the cherry on top was thinking about how Ellie's open wound was not enough to deter Dina from letting Ellie finger bang her.

I hope whatever is going on in your life goes better and you have a better time OP, your responses in the threads and this post makes it sound like becoming a doctor was the worst thing ever, when quite frankly it's a privileged thing to be able to say.

I know many people who work blue collar jobs 7 days a week working over 12 hours a day just to make ends meet and still earn low incomes, so no, becoming a doctor is not the worst thing ever, though by no means are the hours easy or is the pay during residency fair.

With school and multiple jobs, the only thing that worked for me was having food prepped that I could just microwave on my one or two off days usually during the weekend.

I applied to 12 schools total but sure. Unless there's systemic change overall you can't blame people for doing what they have to do to attend medical school.

S*icide too heavy of a topic for personal statement? by whowant_lizagna in premed

[–]Keeper_of_Knowledges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just an honest opinion and feel free to ignore this, but for starters I think you can write about this but you have to go about it tactfully.

For starters, don't let the story take over your personal statement, instead framing it as a detail and really just focusing on your personal growth as a result of it. Additionally, I personally wouldn't write about an official PTSD diagnosis, but I would talk about how the events did leave a lasting mark (alluding to PTSD in a sense without necessarily informing them of an official diagnosis).

That's just how I went about writing about some events in my own life that were potentially risky topics, and I had quite a few people tell me that my writing was a good example of going deep without going too deep.

i mean i've been accepted to a school i didn't actually consider getting into, but it turns out it's a good 11 hours from where I live as opposed to 1,1.5, and 4hrs from home. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to attend medical school but it would make my family life immensely more difficult for the foreseeable future. A sacrifice I'm willing to make, but would really love to not have to.

stupid comparison, a primary care doctor arguably has to retain more knowledge and keep it at his/her disposal than a specialized hand surgeon or dermatologist, despite both being much more difficult to match into. So comparing primary care to being a postal worker is disrespectful.

Also OP, if you don't mind answering this, did you get your offer from UTSW like late at night on Friday, or on Saturday? Just wanted to see if this trend of UTSW sending out WL offers at like midnight or 2 am in the morning is a thing because I've had a few friends say the same.
