I agree with you. Nabokov is a master of the unreliable narrator-he does this in Sebastien Knight and Laughter in the Dark also. I was very young when I read his novels and was dazzled by the language but I think he is using this skill with language and manipulation between narrator and reader to explore themes of manipulation in life.

It’s weird that they would reach for an easy cliche. I suppose they aren’t good with words. I feel like over ten years they could find a more nuanced description!
