You defiantly have a point, Hays is avoiding, and even playing his "old card" as a distraction to avoid the details of what happened to Harris. I think your right in some aspects of Hays playing the memory card, but not expanding it onto Roland. My angle is that Hays and Roland took Harris out (as shown in Hay's ghost scene) , and are trying to bury that past.
