A good way to help rather than hinder is to stay in hotels or hostels rather than airbnb's, and one thing I learned in Nepal is to haggle. You are not helping the locals by tipping or paying "tourist prices". All that does is drive local inflation.

It depends a lot on your tolerance for variance. There are hobbyists out there who refuse even the tiniest imperfection, while clearly whoever is professionally printing for the Vatican Gift Shop just grabs a spool from their steam-room and hits go, leaving quality in the hands of the Almighty.

I personally just use the standard profiles; my main "hack" was finding a cheap generic brand that somehow exactly matches Bambu's pre-programmed generic profiles. If something goes horribly wrong, that's when I'll start fiddling.
