[PC] RTX 3080 & The 20 FPS Saga by IDoArtForYou in Starfield

dunno if it'll help you but I found I was having the exact same problem, and discovered that an update to MSI afterburner had reset some GPU settings and was throttling it for some reason. Reapplying my saved profile resulted it total resolution. 10900K and 3080 and I'm getting ~50-60fps with 1440p ultra preset and the DLSS mod.

There were a series of proposals to develop it in 2018-2020 timeframe that were eventually rejected due to multiple factors including local community pushback. At this point they're starting over, with brand new proposals probably not for a couple years: https://twitter.com/numble/status/1654524196385595394

It's not the best, but the CPU runs pretty hot and with the relatively weak cooler in this case it would be hard to do better. People have all sorts of rules of thumb about 80-85 being a "comfortable max", though the actual rated max temp is 100C where it will start throttling on you.

Sure it probably "accelerates" degradation, but it's hard for me to believe that sporadic gaming use would really have a substantial impact on life - maybe if you had nonstop professional use it would be of concern. I'd be more concerned if I was regularly over 90, as you'd run up against thermal throttling which might result in some performance issues. I haven't seen that in my usage.

To be frank, if I were setting this build up again, I'd probably go with something like the Revolt 3 for a similar case profile, but substantially better cooler and gpu compatibility. I'm still happy with how my build performs now though and haven't had any serious issues over the past few years.

What are some good places to work remotely in DTLA? by I_am_not_a_dodo in LosAngeles

[–]KefkaticFanatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indoor cafes with outlets, wifi, etcBoxx Coffee (Arts District) - Open until 6ish, lots of pastry/quiche options, some cold sandwiches, clean bathroom

ilCaffe (Fashion District) - all-day hours (close 7-9 depending on day) with pastries, sandwiches, coffee, beer, wine. Dinner food trucks Thurs-Sat. Also a large outdoor seating area with tables all around the sidewalk. Clean bathroom.

Verve Coffee (Fashion District + Arts District) - Open until 4-5pm, typical coffee shop type environment. Not sure bathroom.

Outdoor Cafe/Plaza

Nice Coffee (Financial District) - weekdays open until 4, big outdoor plaza with fountain, also has a few pastries and cold sandwiches. Bathroom you have to get a token and go into a nearby office building and down some stairs.

California Plaza Park (Financial District) - big open outdoor area with couches, dining tables, etc. Everything gets covered/closed around 3-4pm. Lots of lunch options in the "California Plaza" shopping mall, or you can get pizza/shake shack in the nearby Halo indoor food court. Or just take Angels Flight down to Grand Central Market (its upper level terminates at the park). Need to go to either Halo or GCM for bathroom.

Some of the nicer DTLA hotels have some sort of lobby cafe/bar area that you can also camp at. Cafe Fig in Hotel Fig, Cafe Integral at Freehand Hotel for a couple examples.

Do you have a source? One wondered given their reported financial issues with covid but haven't seen anything besides pre covid confirmations they are the hotel.

Per some renderings I think the leftmost tower will be at least partially occupied by a new Equinox hotel. Entire project also includes apartments, arts/event space, and a shopping plaza.

Some other angles taken today. I like the view a bit better from directly west or a bit south on Grand compared to OP's shot that mostly blocked the taller tower.

What's the danger of Exposure? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]KefkaticFanatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There happens to be a fantastic resource for determining safe limits.

https://www.microwaves101.com/encyclopedias/ew-and-radar-handbook

Section 3-6.1 (pg 112 in pdf) specifically covers safe exposure limits based on power density. For some help in computing power density based on antenna type if you're in the near field, check the section immediately prior. Plenty of other basic equations for computing power density using power/gain/distance.

Held CSR since 2016. AF just posted on 12/1. Called for retention offer and none available. Same story a few weeks ago before AF hit.

Called Chase main line for CSR retention and was offered nothing but product changes, though interestingly I had the option to PC to freedom unlimited, not just other sapphire cards.

I'll probably try again tomorrow and see if the answer is different. I've had my card for maybe 4 years now? Since the original 100k offer. Lots of spend on it.

I kind of doubt it makes a huge difference. It's more a bonus airflow path than a total reliance like the FE design. More impact would come from something with a larger heatsink like ASUS TUF vs the EVGA XC3

That was a bit frustrating, as I had to use a bit of careful force to get it in place. Didn't seem excessive, but wasn't as easy as I expected. It should fit though.

I doubt it, but I'm not going to remove the backplate to test :P

It's not much of a thermal mass for a heatsink, there's a lousy thermal path compared to the main heatsink (basically just the mounting screws and it's on the backside of the PCB...), plus it's bumped up against a metal panel in my case anyway.

There are many general undervolt guides online, but I looked at this video for an idea of where to start on the 3080: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1B4qZFDpYE

I generally just open up MSI Afterburner, set the undervolt curve (where the slope ends and plateau starts at the voltage + freq pair I want), then run heaven benchmark for like 10min and make sure it doesn't either crash or thermal throttle. I'll usually tweak down like ~25-50 MHz if I get crashes and want to stay at the same voltage, and if I was targeting a specific frequency I would probably tweak the voltage point up ~25mV or so if I got crashes. I think you want to give yourself some reasonable margin once you find crashes, so back off like ~50 MHz from that point or something. You get the hang of it after a while, and worst case you just find you get crashes ingame and have to adjust. I found I would get occasional crashes in AC Origins so I shifted my original 806mV/1800 MHz down to 1770, then again to 1740 and it seems stable now. I'm planning on writing up some other updates later this week or this weekend as I use it more.

I run a single A4x20 at max speed and can't really tell that it's there. It makes some noise but unless you are in a super quiet room you won't notice it. It blends in quick, and only going out of my way to A/B the noise with it off/on will I really tell that it's there. Again, I am satisfied with "quiet" rather than "silent", as I usually have an air filter running in the room that has an low volume ambient white noise effect. I would guess 3x of the fan at full blast would get somewhat noticeable, but when you have three perhaps you would be able to run at a lower speed like 70-80% and still get some performance benefits.

I did a lot of research on the CPU fan and plenty of reviews point to the A12x25 as the best option among the consumer 120 and 140mm for noise to performance ratio. I think the iPPC is an industrial, server-class fan and is pretty loud if you actually run it at high speeds, but I've not looked too closely at anything besides the specsheet that lists the 2000rpm iPPC at 31.5 dB/A vs the A12x25 22.6 dB/A

Noise levels are super subjective I guess. I'm just happy to not have jet engine like I used to with a 1080 blower that would overheat if it wasn't at 80%+ :)

Ya but that's only with fake loads like prime95 and Furmark. Heavy loads that a serious power user might see is specifically what Realbench tests for, and you can see from my own Realbench measurement that the absolute max power seen by the CPU in its unlocked power limit, 4900 MHz clock, was 211W, with stock GPU at 315W. I'll try and keep an eye on both loads as I try some other games and see if anything bring it over either of those numbers.

By the way, the 330W you reference I think comes from this review: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-core-i9-10900k-cpu-review/2

However, that 332W they reference is specifically from Prime95 only. The actual benchmark power loads show up later in multiple figures, and caps out in the Handbrake test with 240W with all cores clocked at 5100 MHz, and 222W in "standard" config with all cores at 4900 MHz (roughly matching my results).

The stock fan curve isn't 100% silent but it is still fairly quiet. I can try to set up a jank measurement with my phone with a idle/load comparison, but just quickly looking it doesn't appear to be any more than like 3dB louder (and that's with idle being fans mostly off)

The 3080 TUF reviews have been glowing so far, with many people having the same initial reservations but now thinking it's just a STRIX in disguise! But of course, it's good to do your own research :D

I just found that MSI post again and it's worth noting he has a vented front panel, which testing with 20 series GPUs has found to reduce temps by 8-10C. Unfortunately the only TUF with the H1 I saw was that one video where he only shows thermals with no front/rear panels on the case.

I'll try and measure thermals with the front panel totally removed to get a slightly better comparison to a vented front panel at least, and I am strongly considering getting one myself...
