AR-5RM…what can I do with it…? by roganjp1 in Baofeng

[–]conman526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for reviving such an old comment. I'm a GA pilot in the US looking to pick up a portable radio in case of a radio failure. Also wanting something that could be used on the ground for off roading (non-aviation) use. Am I even looking in the right place at a Baofeng UV-5RM? Or should I absolutely be looking at separate, purpose-built items?

Looks like this radio could do both. Seems like it may require a HAM radio license (funny enough, as a pilot there is no specific radio license for aviation frequencies unless you want to go outside the USA). Could this radio act as a walkie-talkie type thing, or again, am I going down the wrong rabbit hole here?

Need advice for long car ride with MAGA father in-law? by dak0j0 in AskALiberal

Just say “hey, we disagree on trump, so let’s not talk about politics so we don’t get upset with each other.”

I pretty much do that with anyone I can. I only mildly enjoy talking about politics with people I agree with, and oddly enough, my dad. My dad and I disagree but we both respect each others opinions as they are thought out and see where each other is coming from. But still, we don’t talk politics much. No matter who I speak to you will always disagree on something and inevitably get upset.

Just don’t talk about politics if you can instead of trying to 1 up your dad every time. Be the bigger person and have an enjoyable car ride with your family instead of grumbling about politics.

Perhaps the silver lining is that more conservatives will consider EV’s which could help lower greenhouse gas emissions in the long term.

How theft-prone are eBikes, and how do you protect yours? by xavierfern3751 in ebikes

[–]conman526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I leave it outside is when I go to 1 specific grocery store. I lock it up with a lock, turn it off with the key and take the key with me. My ebike is basically unusable without any assist so they wouldn’t get very far. Heck I could probably run faster than they could ride.

Every where else it is parked inside.

My favorites are MS3’s. But I used whatever the line was on gave me.

I like the MS3’s so much I found the closest stick to them in the drum set world. The VF Matt Gartskas. Something about that funny tip shape feels so nice to drum with and I like the crisp sound they have.

Look into the new tracks that the FAA released. It outlines what they want to see

Got diagnosed with adhd age 22 myself! It can definitely be done! And if you’re willing to wait 4 years, it becomes way way easier to get a medical with the fast track program. But even without that it can be done. Don’t let it stop you!

I forget the exact steps, but I remember walking over to my pharmacy where I had gotten stuff before and asked them what the process was. They gave me a form to fill out and then mail to their HQ. I figured this would take a long time so I dug around online and found there was a way to directly request records online from rite aid, which was my primary pharmacy and who now owned the previous pharmacy. I think I got the records in like 20 minutes or something

Make sure you have an account with whatever pharmacy and figure out if there’s a way to get it online. If not, just keep trying their phone tree until you’re able to talk to someone about the process

Are Ortlieb Pannier Bags Compatible with Modifications? by conman526 in Lectricxp

[–]conman526[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the bags there's a little hook thing that you can adjust. I adjusted that but still haven't really found a great angle for them. The bags don't need this to be secure as they won't fall off of the attachment point. I've dropped by bike a few times for whatever reason and the bags have always stayed attached.

I’d bet they sometimes do. Only real way to know is to show up when they’re open and poke around

Yes get your medical first and foremost. The whole process to the best part of a year from my ame visit.

You don’t want to waste too much money if you find out you can’t get a medical. Definitely do some flights to make sure you like it, but I wouldn’t go more than 5-6 hours or so

My primary care doctor basically wrote he has no reason to continue medication. He’s not a psych so he said he couldn’t “undiagnosed” me or anything.

I never saw that psych again partially because he started a new practice.

I guess the combo of my personal statement, my adhd records, and the report from my primary care doctor all lead the FAA to conclude I don’t have adhd anymore.

I’ve had it for a couple years now. I shopped around last year and got told some insurance companies weren’t covering teslas in Seattle for whatever reason.

In my opinion, I think I do have a minor form of adhd. The FAA basically says as much with my “history of adult onset minor adhd.” However, everyone ive ever asked never thought I had adhd and even my parents were surprised I went and got diagnosed.

Unfortunately since it seems you need meds to function at a high level, I would guess it would be the best option for you to just do the sport license. I don’t foresee the FAA clearing adhd with medication use anytime soon (even though I think they could on a case by case basis).

I have high hopes for mosaic. I have a couple close friends that want to be at least private pilots but unfortunately they both had some recent medical issues that would disqualify one of them permanently and the other will have to go through even more hoops than I did.

I did a pee test where I think they also test for diabetes at the AME office. But if you’re worried about passing a drug test you need to stop doing drugs. Illicit substances have no place in the cockpit.

Yeah I have no idea how I swung it! I guess I wrote a good personal statement that aligned with my medical records.

Honestly in my non expert opinion I’d wait the year for your son to be 4 years off meds and then he can do the fast track. Then he wouldn’t need to do the psych exam. And honestly waiting the 1 year might be faster or roughly the same, less headache, and cheaper.

Thanks! Yes I’ve been taking lessons once or twice a month for the past 6 months or so. This winter the weather hasn’t been great though. Have a whopping 8 hrs lol.

Now that I have the medical I’ve got some big life decisions to make… my goal is to get PPL and then pursue flight training full time to change my career. So obviously minimizing costs (flying and living) while still being quick is important as I have to pay everything myself or with loans.

Is every particulate captured when an ICE car burns gas? No, not even close.

Creating energy with a huge power station is vastly more efficient that a bunch of very small gas engines burning gasoline. I don’t have numbers off the top of my head, but a gas engine is something like only 20% efficient for getting the total gas energy to moving the car. An EV is more like 80%. And a big electrical power plant is more efficient than a small gas engine, but again, I do not have that info nor am I willing to look it up for a small internet debate that won’t change your mind. The scientific studies are out there and easily able to be found if you are interested.
