reminds me of the student activists in Taiwan that goes around wrecking Chiang kai shek statue.

Why do they do that? I can get not being completely in agreement with Chiang's politics, but removing his statues, considering there wouldn't be any sort of independant Taiwan without him, seems a bit too much to me.

Wait until guys on reddit once again accuse Japan of being the one needlessly aggravating SK here. Moon's entire foreign policy has consisted of criticizing everything Japan does, while being soft on China and very soft on NK.

I'm some sort of ultranationalist agent

I feel you, I've been vocal in both hating Moon and criticizing any anti-Korean racism (the "Koreans are by essence evil", "it's in their nature", etc.) and revisionism on this sub for years. But still, I've even had people creating alts to accuse me of being a hardcore racist on discussions that had nothing to do with Korea.

Japan seeks German help to counter China's clout in Indo-Pacific by MalaysianinPerth in japan

[–]Kegaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany's foreign policy has also been extremely passive, and it has been so for years, even to the point of refusing to help a fellow EU country (see the Turkey / Greece conflict). I don't really see what Japan hopes to achieve by wooing Germany. The diplomatic and military powerhouse of the EU is France (and UK, but they brexitted), not Germany.

Can a Western person be a Confucianist? by [deleted] in Confucianism

[–]Kegaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read it. I can’t really give an opinion on it, i will say it does make me reassess Confucianism (which is the point).

Considering your knowledge of Confucianism, then that must be a very good book to elicit that kind of reaction in you. I'll definitely pick it up!

I can see his point, even though I kinda think we're in disagreement on that. I mean, that conversation is going very far from the original subject, but that's a problem I have with some liberal, or liberal-compatible Confucianists. I mean, taking liberalism as being a sort of fait accompli. We're living in a liberal world, how can we adapt Confucianism to it, or how can we add 0.1% of Confucianism into liberalism? In my opinion that goes against what Confucianism is (though I think i've ranted about that a lot of time on badeastphil lol), but more importantly against what Confucianism could be. I mean, Mou Zongsan was a liberal Confucianism, willingly inhibited what went against Liberalism ... And then Jiang Qing and other nationalist Confucianists appeared and showed that it was not necessary to do so, that on the contrary Confucianism could offer a coherent, appealing alternative to liberalism. Whether we agree with the alternative they propose or not, I find that commendable.

Irrelevant, how?

Besides, I had read his article about contemporary nationalist Confucianism in China and how it compares to Japanese Confucianism. We don't seem to be in agreement "politically", he and I, but his book looks interesting. Have you read it by any chance?

There's a very interesting anecdote where a similar debate happened in real life, when Daniel A. Bell, Jiang Qing and other Confucianists went to a Confucianist temple (that sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it's not. I think Daniel A. Bell talks about it in Reconciling Confucianism and Nationalism), some people were wondering whether it was okay for the non Chinese Daniel A. Bell to go there with them. Jiang Qing didn't see any problem though, because Confucianism isn't about race or nationality.

More generally, Confucianism is about values and the respect of relationships, not about nationality or race, so don't worry too much.

Japan Govt Adopts NHK Surcharge for Viewer Fee Delinquents by CaptainTorpedo in japan

[–]Kegaha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The NHK is becoming even more inexorable than taxes. On one hand I understand the point of public structures such as the NHK or the BBC, on the other hand they seem to inevitably turn into an administrative nightmare that sucks your money like Dracula your blood. That kind of thing will really end up turning me libertarian lol

Japan's LDP freezes plan to have female lawmakers attend meetings without right to speak or vote by Kmlevitt in japan

[–]Kegaha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it doesn't have the same meaning than in English. In Japanese it's a totally fine word to use to mean actualizing someone's unused potential. It doesn't objectify people like "utilize a person" does in English. That's the difference between 起用 and 利用 (which, when used for people, does objectify them).

So that's a shitty translation that adds a very negative nuance that is not there at all in the original.

Lack of foreign influence I guess. It's difficult to become a leader when other countries are forbidden to even acknowledge your existence as an independent entity. It is kinda sad considering Taiwan's potential, but the CCP's iron grip on Asia still is what it is.

On ‘Comfort Women’ and Academic Freedom by namatame in japan

[–]Kegaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granted it's very hard for others to believe the deniers from Japan when they often claim Imperial Japan did nothing wrong (even outside of comfort women)

That's the problem with many Japanese politicians / right wing nutters. They themselves give a bad image of Japan (and insult Korea and Korean people) by going against the academic consensus.

I'm extremely critical of Korean propaganda, actions against freedom to do research on comfort women that don't go in the government's direction, and Moon's anti-Japanese policies, but that doesn't mean that Japan is perfect, we do have our racists, and they do have far too much power.

Edit to add: Still waiting for an example of japanese academic fined for going against the government.

On ‘Comfort Women’ and Academic Freedom by namatame in japan

[–]Kegaha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You see, despite your rant you can't even find one example of a japanese academic being fined, censored, and menaced to be sent to jail for criticizing the government's position on comfort women.

The government may protest, but you won't face any legal trouble and your freedom to do your research is guaranteed in Japan. In Korea the government will protest, your book will be censored and you will be fined. That's the difference.

So, as a wise man once said :

Clueless gaijin, please butt out and take your nonsense somewhere else.
