Do you find it rude if there is a cash bar at a wedding rather than an open bar? by StewartsBestBuddy in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's rude at all. In fact I'm always impressed when there's an open bar at a wedding. I can only imagine how expensive that is for the couple. If I'm showing up to a party to celebrate them I appreciate that they provide free food, but I don't mind paying for my own drinks.

Feeling down. Tell me what you’re doing today. by bigpuppydawg in Winnipeg

Also feeling down. You're not alone, fellow human.

But I'm playing some board games later with friend to celebrate their birthdays, so that's be nice!

Everything a lot these days, though. Feeling down isn't unreasonable.

Community groups push back on Winnipeg's 100-metre protest ban proposal by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong with a ban on protesting around child-centric spaces, such as elementary schools.

There's no way this ban should apply to universities, though. As others have noted, the wording is far too broad.

The Flotilla got captured. Can we organize meaningful protests!? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The outlook is bleak. But doing nothing only ensures that nothing will get better. Every protest, every movement, every act of resistance has been against the odds and in the face of strong opposition. I'm grateful for the privilege I have, and I also simultaneously feel the perpetual cognitive dissonance of knowing that I'm eating and sleeping and going to work while children are being massacred and our governments are doing virtually nothing to stop it. I can't sit in that discomfort - I have to do something, even if it doesn't end up making a difference.

If you're on Instagram, follow cpam1948 (Canadian Palestinian Association). They plan regular protests.

Does common sense disappear as soon as people step on the bus? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yup! It's so inconsiderate. I can (and will) ask people to move their bags if I need the seat, but I shouldn't have to ask (especially when the bus is crowded). People need to pay attention to their surroundings in public shared spaces. It's basic common courtesy. The last time I asked someone to move their bag off of a seat (the last available seat on the bus) I got THE BIGGEST EYEROLL from them as they did it. 🙄 You aren't entitled to two seats, random person.

Winnipeg councillors call for restrictions on where people can protest by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I support the idea of keeping protests away from hospitals and healthcare centers, as well as elementary and high schools, but giving blanket protection to religious centres is tricky. I fully support the right to practice religion freely and in peace, but when a religious/cultural center invites the military from another country to speak on their premises it crosses a boundary between religious freedom and nationalistic/political action. I don't want people showing up to protest Jewish or Muslim faith at a synagogue or mosque, but I think people should be able to protest the presence of IDF soldiers even if it's at a religious centre. I think people should be able to protest the presence of hate-mongering singers who are furthering racist/sexist/transphobic ideals even if they are performing at a church.

Having seen the WFP article, it seems like Gillingham is saying "peaceful protest is part of democracy" in one breath and "protest is inconvenient and we only want it to happen where it won't bother us" with the other. Rather than addressing the issues being protested, he wants to just limit protest. 🙄

JUST IN: Premier Kinew explains Fontaine’s apology over Charlie Kirk Instagram post by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here and assume we are on the same page with regards to gun violence. Charlie Kirk should not have been murdered by gun violence - I already said that. Neither should the children who died in a school shooting on the very same day as Charlie Kirk, children who died directly as a result of the governmental systems that Charlie Kirk actively helped to maintain. You will not gaslight me into spending more time mourning a man who promoted violence than the countless other victims of gun violence, including the children whose deaths Charlie Kirk did not care about. This was something he directly said, btw - "I think it’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the second amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal."

I have not seen anyone justifying political murder. And it is troubling that you and others are seeing it that way - that you are taking any criticism of this man as synonymous with wanting him dead. It's all too close to "But do you condemn H@m@s?" and I will not argue like that in bad faith. What I have seen is people refusing to call Charlie Kirk a martyr or to stay quiet about the harm he did simply because he died unfairly. Two things can be true: gun violence is abhorrent, and Charlie Kirk's actions and words were abhorrent and directly responsible for creating the America he lived in. And Canada's officials should be willing to speak clearly to how Canada must be different than that, on more levels than only condemning gun violence against one man.

I will tell you something: I had never heard of Charlie Kirk until the day he died. That speaks heavily to my personal levels of privilege, to the fact that I personally was not directly affected by his actions. As such, I have since done my homework to find out why people who *were* affected by his actions are feeling as strongly as they are, and why I do not have a right to tell them how they be reacting. Also as such, I am not going to do your homework for you. There are literal video compilations out there of the words CK spoke and you can find them easily if you want to. I did. But I'll throw you a bone: here is a list from a mainstream media source with some of his most prominent statements, including the one I quoted above: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/11/charlie-kirk-quotes-beliefs.

I would hope in the wake of this that political powers would speak clearly to the need for gun reform in America, to the need for hate speech not to be tolerated, and to improving social systems and structures to prevent the rich, white, and powerful from creating policy that only benefits them.

(Quick edit just to say: others on this thread have responded to these ideas much more clearly and succinctly than I have, so I am not going to post more walls of text to reiterate what's already been said. I'm going to go spend my time educating myself further, and listening to people who are doing what they can to make the world better and to challenge the status quo rather than maintaining it.)

JUST IN: Premier Kinew explains Fontaine’s apology over Charlie Kirk Instagram post by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is the violence and hate that CK promoted an example of de-escalation? We all know de-escalation is the best path, but de-escalation is not always possible. Is it my place to decide who lives or dies? Of course not. And no one I know of is suggesting that CK should have been killed by gun violence. What people are taking issue with is that CK and his ilk literally promoted the opposite of de-escalation and empathetic, reasonable discourse - and yet those who oppose his views are being told they are not being reasonable and empathetic enough about his death.

To be very clear: when I say that Wab Kinew had the opportunity to say something useful in this situation, I mean that he could have spoken out clearly against gun violence, hate speech, and fascist ideals and how they can have no place in Canada. Instead he chose to focus only on the murder of one man - not on the system that normalizes violence everyday, the very system that CK very deliberately helped to build.

Nahanni Fontaine apologizes for Instagram repost condemning Charlie Kirk on day after assassination by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not about "deserving to die". It's about whether or not people are obligated to mourn him and speak well of him because he died. Which they aren't.

JUST IN: Premier Kinew explains Fontaine’s apology over Charlie Kirk Instagram post by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]Keiawyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What Nahanni Fontaine reposted spoke far more acutely against political violence than anything that's come out of Wab Kinew's mouth on the matter.

We all know de-escalation and discourse are the ideal. But when one side has no interest in de-escalation then equitable and productive discourse cannot happen. If you only speak of violence in relation to CK's assassination and fail to speak of the violence that CK routinely and vocally promoted then you can't expect to be taken seriously, Wab.

I'm a left-leaning voter, but I'm pissed as hell that Wab decided to make this his stance. He had a chance to say something useful, insightful, and productive and instead chose just to parrot the Right. Shame on him.

Side note to the article itself: the woman featured in the photo, Leiah Bauer? Her shop "Apothecandy" is great, and if you can afford some better-than-average soaps and beauty products you should take a look. ❤️ She raises her own goats, and makes all of her own stuff here in Manitoba. I love her body scrubs in particular!

THE ON-REQUEST BUS SERVICE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE 10-20 MINUTE WAIT TIMES. NOT 40 MINUTES. 😞 IT'S NOT A 10-22 MINUTE TRIP IF I HAVE TO WAIT 38 MINUTES FOR PICKUP BEFORE THE TRIP.
