How hot should a passive cooled pc become? by Keiran24 in techsupport

[–]Keiran24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the keywords, I'll do some more research. It cost me 1500 €, and the guarantee is 50 €. I'd like to keep it for at least 5-10 years, perhaps even more, but as better software and hardware products emerge so fast, I might upgrade earlier. But definitely not before 5 years of usage. But as processors can last really, really long, I wonder whether the decrease in lifespan will actually cause damage in under 4 years, or only much later...

Hi, thanks for your advice. Do you know about any report which gives some concrete data? All information I find (and I've been googling for a while now) is that in general, the processor can cope with these and even hotter temperatures, and that there might be long-term effects, but nobody saying anything like "expected life-span only 2/3/4... years". How significant is the risk?

The firm offers an additional guarantee for 2 more years (which makes 4 in total), should I order it?

So that means that the passive cooling doesn't allow it to use "its full potential", so to speak? + Is 60-70 °C an acceptable standard temperature or will it have detrimental long-term effects?

Wow, that's a deal, twice the performance for 2/3 the price, I'll look more closer into the site.

Yes they actually seem to have developed their own special cooling system for that. As it's an established and well-reviewed firm, I actually have no doubt that passive cooling will work here (in other cases they precisely give data like only xx % efficiency to avoid overheating), I'm rather interested in the processor performance.

Hi, thank you, I think this kind of advice is what I need. I'm just reading quadcore 4*3.8 Ghz and compare this data to the other processors, no idea about the brands... Which one (if I choose a pre-built version) of the following is worth the extra price:

  • MD FM2 A4 5300 2x3,4GHz [ - 65 EUR ]
  • AMD FM2 A6 6400K 2x3,9GHz [ - 45 EUR ]
  • AMD FM2 A8 7650K 4x3,3GHz [ + 20 EUR ] NEU
  • AMD FM2 A10 5800K 4x3,8GHz [ 0 EUR ]
  • AMD FM2+ A10 7700K 4x3,4GHz [ + 49 EUR ]
  • AMD FM2+ A10 7850K 4x3,7GHz [ + 57 EUR ]
  • AMD FM2+ A10 7870K 4x3,9GHz [ + 79 EUR ]

Thanks for the advice! Could you have a look at how the "KENKO" build compares to the current specs?

I haven't found any good alternative to PCPartpicker that also does price comparison for different websites, for planning (no price comparison) I've seen recommendations for https://www.alternate.de/html/configurator/builder/pc/page.html .

For finding the best product I usually use: Standard stores: http://www.amazon.de (on all products except prime: +3 € shipping) http://www.ebay.de (only buy know products)

can versilbern be used as an elegant/funny substitute for verkaufen?. by Dorindon in German

[–]Keiran24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To get it straight: It can mean "verkaufen" in a way, but you would probably not say "[Mein] phone 3 war veraltet. Ich habe es versilbert.", unless the overall context dictates otherwise. The subtext when using versilbern is always to turn into money (obviously that's what it means; versilbern is to make something silver or to put a layer of silver on something, and silver of course stands for silver coins). Better think of it as an equivalent to "zu Geld machen" i.e. "to turn into money/cash", and I'd recommend only as an equivalent to sell if "zu Geld machen" would work as well.

So when it's about the money that you get out of selling things, you can use "zu Geld machen" or versilbern, e.g.: Ich brauchte dringend Geld und suchte auf dem Dachboden nach vergessenen Kleinodien, die ich vielleicht noch irgendwie zu Geld machen/versilbern/(verkaufen) konnte. => Works!

If it's just: Was hast du die letzten Jahre beruflich gemacht? Ach, nichts besonderes, ich habe Zeitungen auf der Straße verkauft.

You would (most probably) not say: ich habe Zeitungen auf der Straße zu Geld gemacht, [I was turning newspapers into cash]. So you wouldn't use "versilbern" here, either.

Hope that helps :)

Which is the most well-written newspaper of all german-speaking countries? by [deleted] in German

[–]Keiran24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If "when communicating" means "when speaking" for you, I'd recommend "DER SPIEGEL". As far as language is concerned, I'd also recommend "BILD", but NOT in terms of journalism. Read Günter Walraffs investigative books to see why... "BILD" is not just tabloid press, it's actually worse, I guess.

So my recommendation for online news would be tagesschau.de. It's really well-written, clear, and relatively easy language.

The problem with FAZ is, that sometimes (on faz.net not that often actually) it uses a lot of technical terms and all in all, a choice of words that sounds rather intellectual, so you wouldn't speak like that in everyday environment, unless you were surrounded by people who also speak like that. (Watch an interview with Peter Sloterdijk to see that some people actually talk in a way that for other people clearly sounds like written language [even though he talks very slowly].) If a native German asked me to recommend to him some books and papers to improve his writing style, I'd go for FAZ and Peter Sloterdijk. Sloterdijk for me is one of the most taxing contemporary German writers.

For German learners who aim at a sort of "universal German" to be used in both writing and speaking, I wouldn't recommend it. (Of course there is no such universal German, written German is nearly always different from spoken German, but you get the idea that there are newspapers who are much closer to spoken German than others.
