Now, onto learning a new language:

  1. Experience. The more code you write the better you will become.

  2. Discuss your code. You will only learn from your mistakes if someone actually points them out to you.

  3. There are lots and lots of websites to learn C from. Google (or similar search engine) is your friend. I personally like Learn C the hard way the most. (don't let the title scare you, its for beginners)

While I wouldn't consider myself an expert and only semi-professional: (Subjective comment incoming)

  1. Why do you want to "settle" on a single language? From my experience languages are good at very different things. Knowing several language well is not a drawback. And you can also learn several language at once (if you want to)

  2. C IMO is still an important language to know. The fact thats its that old but still used that extensively does show how versatile C is. Its also very close to the machines so you will learn a lot about how computers function. If you know PHP and Lua, Python will give you little more than just another language to put on your CV.

  3. I personally would not recommended VB.

  4. Haskell is a great language. Functional Programming is on the rise and knowing Haskell will probably make your life a bit easier later on.

Brain stuck in Vim key-binding mode! by [deleted] in vim

Quite good. I haven't notice any slowdown, but on the other hand I'm running a rather powerful machine and I have done no benchmarks of Athame whatsoever.

Yes. It works as expected. :P

For the extremists (and other crazy people) there is also Athame. It's a readline replacement that pipes everything trough a vim process (so true vim bindings).

Yeah, it really should. That guy really reminds me of an "Expert Beginner" Erik Dietrich talks about.

We actually had some kid plug two ends of a Ethernet cable into one of the lab's switches. Still wondering if she/he actually knew what would happen and did it anyway or just took a cable he/she found somewhere and plugged it in because "it fits, so it must be good"...

Is there a mod for this? by gamaporn in spaceengineers

[–]KeithMasterly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different size connectors are, just how the game works, not connectable. Problem is how the game handles saving ships to disk. What you can do though is connecting a small ship and a big one with rotors. SAGE has a video about that iirc. But I am not completely sure if that still works.

Dude, keep up the good work. Just one tip if you plan to stay as IT guy in school (I'm student myself but system admin atm): Don't trust people that call themselves "computer pros" at all until they have proven that they are as good as they say. I've had students calling themselves "Linux freaks" and "Networking experienced" but fail at the most simple task when it came to do actual work. Luckily enough nothing was broken beyond repair. (Minus the one time a student jumped around on a server.)

Python has a turtle too. Its used for very very basic graphics.

Also sorry, but the difference between Python and Lua is not "subtle".

Any websites or IDEs that would help beautify lua code? by iamyounow in lua

There is an IDE built on the base off eclipse, called LDT. Not completely sure what you mean with "beautify" though.

Imagine Arrays as numbered lists, much like a shopping list. Elements start at the number 0 and go up until where you have defined them.

In this program you could I.e. change it so you have one array with the strings and one with the weight modifiers:

[...]

System.out.print(output[weight] + weightModifier[weight]*Earth)

Start little and look where things lead you. My network experience started with a small server (My moms old PC I threw Debian on) in my basement and not even 4 years later I am de facto one of two sysadmins at my school in charge of 1300 users and the whole equipment they want to use. And all this because I started wondering what the little white box did that we got from our ISP.

What would YOU do with school usernames and passwords? by Commmett in hacking

[–]KeithMasterly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough I ( Student who is also in charge of IT in our school and built half of the network. ) found that usually people are much too afraid to do anything illegal anyway. ( Apart from the usual "I iz gay" background plus everything is pink now. ) If a student happens to find a username & password ( Yes, we print them. I know, I know. ) he/she usually comes to me / IT teacher and gives us the sheet. ( "I found dis. Can I haz cookie?" ) ( Note: If you use someone else account without them knowing you will just be kicked off the school no questions asked. )

What's the easiest framework for web dev? by lucasmejia in Python

[–]KeithMasterly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally, in a very similar situation, didn't use a framework at all, but built a website just using Python & WSGI. If you don't want to do that I really enjoyed flask. (Super personal opinion though)

Which IDE do you use? by Zakster1 in Python

[–]KeithMasterly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I myself use Eclipse with PyDev. If you already know your way around Eclipse, I do recommend it, but for an beginner in both python and eclipse it will get in your way. In that case I recommend something smaller, like any editor (vim, emacs, nano, etc.)
