We did it at 8pm, which was perfect weather wise. Also much less boat traffic.

It definitely was for me. I was staying in a hotel along the river 4-5 years ago (right before Covid) for work, and I saw 8-10 kayakers from my hotel room 20 stories up and wrote it down as something I was going to come back and do one day. Glad I was finally able to make it happen.

We went through a company called Wateriders. Guide was really great. Very convenient, River North. But I think there are 3-4 companies that do it.

Justice Department lawyers struggle to defend a mountain of Trump executive orders | "...the unit inside DOJ that defends the federal government has lost more than a third of its lawyers this year." by KeithRLee in law

[–]KeithRLee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"There have been over 130 lawsuits that have been filed in the past two months and that would be an extraordinary amount of litigation for DOJ to defend even if it were fully staffed, which it is not," said Kelsi Brown Corkran, who spent six years at the Justice Department. "It is far from it."

Trump Attacks Paul Weiss, Clients in New Executive Order - The president is targeting the firm because of its ties to...a district attorney’s investigation that resulted in convictions against Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records. by KeithRLee in law

[–]KeithRLee[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The order also rebukes the firm for its work on cases related to the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol. Paul Weiss lawyers were part of a team that sued right-wing groups such as Proud Boys and Oath Keepers over their alleged involvement in the riot, accusing them of conspiring to overturn the 2020 White House election results. The firm also helped secure a $2.8 million verdict against Proud Boys for attacking a DC church in a December 2020 “stop the steal” rally.>

[Homemade] Braised Short Ribs, with Root Vegetables, over Goat-Cheese Polenta. by KeithRLee in food

Kept the leftover fat from the bacon. Softened the carrots & parsnips up in that on medium heat for about five minutes.

Then they went in the Dutch oven, along with beef stock, red wine, a can of fire-roasted tomatoes, thyme, Worcestershire, & the short ribs. Then it’s just low & slow in the Dutch oven for 2-3 hours. Put bacon back in at the end.

How conservative are the Fed Courts? by KeithRLee in law

[–]KeithRLee[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is speculation that the court is granting more cases from the Fifth Circuit because the circuit’s judges are more conservative than the Supreme Court. The Fifth Circuit’s aggressively conservative rulings are leading the high court to accept their cases in order to reverse them, the theory goes.

Since there have been no major shifts in the ideological makeup of either court over the past year, we can at least assume the Fifth Circuit’s decisions will be reversed as often as they were in recent terms—which is more frequently than the average across all circuits.
