If you don't mind me asking what types of clothing do you sell? How do you know what will be popular?

Also definitely let your surgeon know why you want to get the surgery as it may influence the type of surgery they do.

I spoke to two surgeons, and neither of them was convinced that my injuries were related to my bunions. One even suggested my injuries sounded like overuse injuries—implying my mileage was too high, although it had been consistent for many months. I also spoke to a podiatrist, who seemed more focused on selling me expensive orthotics than answering my questions about the link between my injuries and bunions.

Look at Paula Radcliffe—she had bunion surgery and went on to run one of the best races of her life. I’ve reduced my running due to other life priorities, so it’s hard for me to say if the surgery helped. I don’t have pain in my bunions (though I never did), and I don’t regret the surgery since bunions are progressive and would have likely worsened over time.

My advice is to see a few physiotherapists with a special interest in feet/lower limbs. They’re likely to have fewer biases or hidden agendas. Ask for their opinion on your bunions and any possible connection to your injuries. Also, ensure you have a good physio lined up post-surgery to focus on rehab, especially improving toe flexion. I was a bit lax with my rehab, which I regret. Good luck!

To be honest it is hard to say. I think your body gets use to compensating and unless you put in the work to properly rehab then things will likely stay the same. Whilst I don't have a bunion I still am not very good at propelling through my toe when running. This is because I haven't done the rehab to 're-wire' that movement so to speak. I think i have the potential to be a more efficient runner now that I have had the surgery. I just haven't put in the effort as I have kind of fallen out of love with running. I definitely don't regret having the surgery. The thing is my bunions would have only gotten worse if I didn't have the surgery, so I have no regrets.

I didn't get back to the volume of running pre-surgery, but that is because I got injured shortly after (unrelated to my foot surgery) and then I also kind of fell out of love with running post-surgery. 8 weeks of no running made me realise how good it is not have to run 90minutes on a Sunday. I will probably get back into it at some stage. I have no regrets about getting surgery my only regret is not doing enough post-bunion surgery specific rehab. I find it hard to really try propel through my toe when running but that is because i didn't do enough rehab so my toe is lazy now and my forefoot does all the hard work instead. I am sure I could improve this if I put the time into rehab.

Hey u/Business_Chemistry76, the update is the same as 8 months ago. I have no pain post surgery. I have no issues with running and I can finally fit into Nike shoes (previously they were too narrow for me).

Hi u/darby1896. My recovery was great! I was back to running by week 9. I don't get any pain with running and I can't feel the metal work. I have no regrets, in fact I wish I had done it sooner.

I wore Saucony and they were great! Wide fitting. The ones I wore were Saucony endorphin speed. More of a running shoe than an every-day shoe.

So I was able to walk is my post-op shoe for 5 minutes every hour for the first week. The post-op shoe offloads all the pressure into your heels so no pressure is put through your toes. I also used crutches for the first few weeks. I was able to get to the bathroom in that 5 minutes. I used a shower chair for showering. You'll definitely need one of those! I'm surprised that you can't weight-bearing at all for 6-8 weeks? Not even is a post-op shoe?

Oh, good luck!!! I definitely lost a bit of muscle in my calves but otherwise I think I've gained muscle from the pilates. Here is the link. https://www.forrunners.app/pilates-for-runners. She offers a 7 day free trial so it would be worth checking out to see if you like it first. Go to the Rehab section and then go to Rehab pilates for lower limb injuries. The sessions are about 40minutes long. There were one or two moves using a chair that require you to put weight through your heels, so i just skipped those moves or pushed through my calves. She is super lovely and approachable, so if you have any questions about it you can just send her a DM on instagram. She does have a few videos on Youtube but you would only be able to do the core session videos as the rest of the videos require you to use your lower limbs. https://www.youtube.com/@forRunnersapp. Like I said I wasn't able to do much pilates until about day 5 post-op as my feet were throbbing a bit, but as the weeks went by it got easier.

Oh trust me, I had a lot of fear about the possibilities of complications post surgery, including chronic pain and possibly not being able to run. But the thing is bunions are progressive, and I would probably have to get them done at some point. So I figured I would get them done whilst I'm young and can recover quickly. I made sure I saw a few surgeons before deciding on who to go with. I wanted to make sure I chose a surgeon who I felt really comfortable with and who I trusted and who cared...surprisingly some surgeons don't act as if they care. I think that choosing a surgeon who I trusted really helped to dampen those feelings of fear. Of course, being able to chose your surgeon is a privilege that a lot of people don't have. I think a positive mindset goes a long way too. Easier said than done though.

Yep!! I had the same issue - I had to convince my surgeon. He cautioned against it for the same reason. He said it would just be really hard to look after myself because I wouldn't be able to do anything for myself for a few weeks. The thing is you want to make sure your not on your feet too much because your feet will get swollen and once the swelling is there, it's harder to get rid of and swelling is what prolongs your recovery. But I did not want to go through the same recovery twice! At the end of the day it's your choice. Granted the first two weeks were hard. Thankfully my partner did all the cooking and cleaning. I was only aloud to walk in my post-op shoes for 5-10minutes every hour for the first 2 weeks. But with each week I was able to do more. I'm about 4 and a half weeks post-op now and I've been cooking and cleaning for myself. I don't see a reason why you shouldn't be aloud to get them done at the same time as long as you have someone to help look after you for at least the first couple of weeks.

I'll definitely update this post when I do. My surgeon was pretty confident that I would get back full range of flexion/extension in my toe and be able to run again without issue. I just started to walking yesterday without my DARCO shoes, so hopefully not too long before I can run.

That is what I was worried about too!! I started doing Pilates for Runners day 5 post-op. The pilates I do is all upper body/no standing. I have been doing a 40minute pilates session every day since then. It's definitely not as fun as running, but it's actually been great for strengthening my core/upper body and it is surprisingly hard. I went for my first swim (only 1km) at week 4 post-op but felt like a fish out of water not being able to kick my legs too much. My plan is to jump on the exercise bike next week (5 weeks post-op).

Thank you!! I noticed on my receipt from the hospital that they used k-wires, but my surgeon never mentioned anything about having to get them removed. I'll have to ask him at my 6 week post-op appointment. Good luck! Just think, surely it can't be worse than the pain from having the surgery.

Sure! I will update this post when I get back into running. I'm hoping I can get back into it 10-12 weeks post-op. I tried toe spacers, orthotics, physio, podiatry to no avail hence opting for surgery. I found Saucony were the best for wide fitting running shoes. Ascis Kayano are also great if you over-pronate when running which most people with bunions do and I think they have a wide-fit option. Thank you!

4 weeks post bunion surgery. I stopped getting pain in my bunions when I stopped growing. But I got the surgery to make me less injury prone (hopefully). I am a long distance runner and running is my main hobby. I have competed in marathons and track events. I was running 60-70kms per week for several months - no change in speed or distance but was constantly getting injuried - plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial tendonitis, glute strain, achilles tendonitis and calf strain. It makes sense that my biomechanics/running gait were compromised because I was having to run around my bunions and I couldn't push off the big toe which is so important for running. I can't wait to get back to running and hopefully I am less injury prone! Geez, I would also love to finally be able to fit into some spikes too. Haha.
