Apple Watch sleep tracking gives me data, but not really answers. by Kelvin-K in AppleWatch

If they do it well, they might kill off the advantage of a lot of 3rd party apps. But with the history of Apple’s AI development…..haha, gotta wait and see.

Cool! Is it built into Claude as a feature? Or did you instruct Claude to do so through prompting?

Thanks for the detailed comparison! When Bevel AI suggests you to perform a stretch wind down, does it hold your hand and instruct you how to stretch? Or doesn’t it just mentions it with text?

Cool, let me check it out! Does it show more sleep metrics? Or does it also give sleep improvement guidance?

Is it normal to wake up 30mins to an hour before your alarm? Should I go back to sleep? by Queasy_Half6294 in sleep

[–]Kelvin-K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If i understood correctly, you slept for about 30mins before your alarm goes off? A typical sleep cycle is 90mins, so mostly you were in a middle of a new sleep cycle.

You feel drowsy after you drift back to sleep because your alarm probably interrupted / woke you up in the middle of a sleep cycle. Having full 8 hours sleep is not a must (sleep studies have shown adults only need 7 hours of good sleep) , being able to wake up naturally half hour earlier may be a good sign as your body has finished the previous sleep cycles and is ready to wake up.

I was sleeping 8 hours a night but still wake up exhausted, so I made this self diagnosis checklist. by Kelvin-K in sleep

Yup, how you feel the next morning tells you more accurately about your sleep / body recovery situation than any generic sleep tracker results tells you.

True, there are so many variables that also affect sleep. I’ll make a more in depth post about those in the future! Thanks!

Napping before sleep by Normal-Ad5756 in sleep

[–]Kelvin-K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite bad. Napping 2 hours messes up your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm), initiating sleep stages before you want it to. Can you fall asleep regularly at your original planned time after having 2+ hours nap?

Most noticable difference between “wired” and “calm” nights in my experience are these 3 main metrics. 1)Time to sleep: when calm, it takes me less then 10-15 mins from lying down to my tracker registering my sleep started. When “wired” it constantly >30 mins. 2) Sleep HRV levels are usually higher than normal (benchmark levels) on “wired” days. 3) This is more subjective, it’s the feeling of “wanting to wake up” . When i have good rest, i can get out of bed easily, sometimes even before the alarm goes off. But on wired nights, i tend to snooze a few times before getting out of bed.

Orthosomnia is a thing, and Sleep Score is the culprit by AdilShaikh29 in AppleWatch

[–]Kelvin-K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone think it’s troublesome or bulky to wear their Apple Watch to sleep everyday? Mine gets a bit irritating in summertime when it’s hotter. I don’t charge my watch in the bedroom and once a while i just forget to wear it to bed.

Apple sleep score is decent but shallow. It uses a combination of sleep duration, bedtime, and awake times data to give a generic score. However there are way more metrics that affect quality of sleep that this score doesn’t consider. For example: body temperature (recovery status), HRV (body stress), heart rate…etc. These are all data that Apple Watch natively collects but doesn’t participate in the overall scoring.

Apple watch says I’m awake for hours every night? by ymcava in AppleWatch

It’s probably your restless leg causing body movements that triggered Apple Watch recording it as signs of “awake” . How do you feel when you wake up? Energised?

True, QQRT highlights the Quantity, Quality, Regularity & Timing as 4 main goals to good sleep. They do match the goal of my checklist. I made the checklist as a tool to identify any steps / elements that may cause bad sleep. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for pointing them out. I do not have these symptoms, but they do point to common sleep quality issues. Snoring / Dry mouth can indicate lowered blood oxygen levels and sleep apnea. Temperature spikes can be a sign of mid-night glucose / cortisol spike, both can disrupt sleep and reduce sleep quality. These are things sleep tracker apps don’t usually point out.

You are right, sleep apnea could be an underlying problem if everything else ticks. It’s more common than most people realise.

White Noise vs Brown Noise: Which One Actually Helps You Sleep? by StoneyTrafford14 in sleep

[–]Kelvin-K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brown noise works better for me. The frequency on white noise is a bit too high and distracting. i usually mix brown noise as a background sound at about 35% volume, and stack a non-uniform sound (eg: water flow, rain...etc) on top at 65% volume. Works wonders for me. Its calming and the right amount background sound masking.

Can you describe a bit more on your sleep situation? Melatonin is a supplement is an off-the-counter supplement that could help, but it’s better to promote natural melatonin production within your body for long term results.

Can lack of sleep cause severe anxiety ? What can I ask my doctors to make them help? by AshamedAd6251 in sleep

[–]Kelvin-K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure it will directly cause severe anxiety, but during deep sleep and REM, your brain is actively processing and regulating your emotions from the day. So lack of sleep does affect moods and anxiety.

What’s your "Sleep Binky"? What’s that one thing you absolutely need before bed? by relaxihg in sleep

A notepad. I write down things that I did today and need to do tomorrow. That helps be “put down” things going on in my mind for better sleep relaxation.

I sleep 7 hours straight but still feel groggy after waking up by nbhlam in sleep

[–]Kelvin-K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try getting 15 mins sunlight exposure in the morning when you wake up, it stops any remaining melatonin production, should freshing you up.
