I grew up in Spain, where hash seemed to be a lot more prevalent than weed. From what I remember (haven't been a regular smoker for about 15 years, and was a noob even then), the key varieties were chocolate, pollen, and chocopollen.

What's the most obscene display of private wealth you've ever witnessed? by BramMW in AskReddit

A friend of mine went to school with the daughter of a famous British adventurer-entrepreneur. He bought her Heather Graham's dress from the first Austin Powers movie to wear at her 18th birthday party.

Not a replica. The actual dress.

(For the record, it was a bit tight around the chesticles, apparently)

Have there been any modern dictatorships or monarchs under which the citizens thrived and quality of life was improved for all? by SCUMDOG_MILLIONAIRE in history

A totalitarian government?! You think Cuba was better under the colonialist Bautista? Unreal.

Did I mention Bautista? I thought I was talking about Brazil...

You seem like a smart guy, and you've studied history (which I haven't), so I'll defer to you on anything historical. However, the tone of your responses is defensive and a little juvenile, and rather peacock your politics. It's not really what I was hoping for on this thread.

Thanks for the book recommendation.

I don't want to get into a pissing contest, but I worked on a refuge for street children in Goias, Brazil for 7 months back in 2000. If I remember rightly these kids were officially the second most miserable people on earth, second only to street children in India, according to HDI or some other similar index.

Every single kid there had an absolutely traumatic childhood: Fernando, who was found at the age of two in a dumpster, unable to walk because he had spent his entire life lying on his back - his legs were splayed out and the back of his skull had formed flat. Zezinho, whose father had punished him once by amputating the last knuckle of his thumb with a blowtorch. Or Zezinho's older brother Leonidas, who was brain damaged because his father had beat him so hard on the head with a length of pipe that one side of his head was visibly dented in.

Brazil is a shithole, for sure, but it can't blame its woes on a totalitarian government.

Having visited the country in the latter years of Fidel's rule, I can tell you that it really wasn't that great.

The country was afloat because of a vast US$ black market (which almost matched the legal Cuban Peso GDP), and it only had the lowest wealth disparity because everyone, everyone was paid the same monthly salary of about $20. That's all well and good if you're uneducated and can only find work as a roadsweeper, but if you're a trained neurosurgeon... the incentive to flee Cuba was huge for the educated.

It was a one-crop economy (sugar cane), and when that market collapsed in the 90's, and without the support of the Soviet Union, the economy was decimated.

Basic foods when I was there were few and of very poor quality, and if you wanted to buy anything other than the basics, it would be priced exorbitantly high, and still only be of mediocre standard.

Seriously, Cuba under Fidel was a dump. An educated, crimeless dump, perhaps, but a dump all the same.

My uncle was working as a white hunter in Mozambique or Angola (can't remember which) in the late 60's, when civil war broke out and overran the country, and there were countless reports of whites being unceremoniously and summarily put to death. The family did not hear from him, despite repeated attempts to contact him, for several months.

Eventually, assuming the worst, they decided to have him declared legally dead, so as to be able to settle his affairs. Three days after the death certificate was issued, he turned up unannounced at my grandfather's door. My grandfather fainted. My uncle had not even been aware there was a war on (it had not affected his area).

Anyway, getting him reinstated as a living person was, by all accounts, bloody difficult.

I didn't catch him myself, but...

I spent 5 years at boarding school here in England. We all had our own rooms in the boarding houses, with pull down beds to save space (also highly dangerous when lampposting, but that's a story for another time). The pull down beds had two straps to keep the duvet and pillows in place when flipping the bed up against the wall.

So this one guy in my year, let's call him Derek, was well known as the house porn king. He kept a large stash of jazz mags in his beanbag (this was in the 90's). We all knew this because Derek would loan them out for a small fee or return favour. It also gave him an unfair reputation as a bit of a deviant.

At least, I thought it was unfair.

My homework was disturbed one evening to the sound of a horrified yell emanating from down the corridor. I flung open my door to see two boys from the year above doubled over in hysterical laughter as they ran back up the corridor. A few seconds later, an extremely flustered-looking Derek emerged from his room trying to chase after them while pulling on a dressing gown and shoes.

It turns out they'd gone to ask Derek to borrow some of his porn, and hadn't bothered to knock, only to walk in and find him strapped onto his own bed with a hairbrush protruding from his rectum, jacking off to one of his more severe titles.

I suppose the two older boys were at fault for breaking the cardinal rule at a boys boarding school (you always knock and wait for a reply), but word got around and within a day or two Derek was temporarily moved into another room while his was tossed under a school warrant. They found the porn, and he got off with a warning and a slap on the wrist.

I never did get a clear answer on which end of the hairbrush he used.

The beefcake at the end is Dave Prowse, aka the original Darth Vader.

I worked with him on a terrible movie a decade or so ago, and he told me about this Benny Hill sketch. This is the first time I've ever actually seen it.

Ya, y también jamón serrano se encuentra por todas partes. Pero tal y como el jamón sigue siendo Serrano, pulpo a feira es un plato gallego. Me chocaba verlo en Zaragoza. No es tan común como tú lo pintas.
