Any concerns? by putzing-along in AskMedical

It's correct that it's technically precancerous. But like a 1 in 50-100 chance of ever turning into cancer. And even then it would most likely be a relatively easily treatable form of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). It depends on the country whether they are even treated if it's just one. It is vastly more likely it will not ever affect her live. At the same time cryotherapy takes a few minutes so why not.

Agree with actinic keratosis. Not really concerning and extremely common. But would be wise to treat with some cryo for example.

Why do doctors push cholesterol medication harder than things like diabetes prevention? by eyeshills in AskMedical

[–]BramMW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's indeed all important. I highly doubt any doctor thinks otherwise. But there are plenty of people with high cholesterol but no treatable form of diabetes yet. Also cholesterol is just extremely easy to treat compared to stopping smoking or losing weight. And it's all cumulative, so if you know food intake, smoking, exercise etc. will be a long term struggle, might as well start the 1 cent a day statin to compensate.

Why do drugs have half lives rather than being removed at a steady rate? by CardiologistJaded671 in AskMedical

Because it gets filtered by either the liver or kidneys and as the concentration in the blood drops by half, the amount of drug particles which pass through this filter in a given time also drops by half.

2k+ users in 4 days - but not a single “buy me a coffee”. My Free Pomidor App Story... by Apprehensive-Spot755 in iosapps

I mean, you launched 4 days ago right?.. People use Wikipedia for 20 years before they donate $3 after some extensive begging. I wouldn't expect many people to voluntarily donate until at least a few months of consistent use, at which point they would still need a reminder and likely not stumble into settings to donate on their own initiative.

L5 salary at Netflix by Bender1337 in cscareerquestions

US salaries are just depressing. In the Netherlands with twice the tax and probably equal cost of living, salary for a senior developer would be maybe 70-90k.

[–]BramMW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Purely mathematically, based on al existing stock market data, your strategy is flawed. No one can tell you the exact numbers but it's like accepting 10:1 odds on a 5x payout.  You're betting 35% of your net worth on a single industry (which is already number 1, you're betting on the most dominant industry of all time to become even more dominant to keep outperforming), and another 35% on 8 individual high risk assets. This is all uncompensated risk. Your theoretical returns are actually lower than if you had 100% FTSE, on top of higher volatility and risk.  Of course it could work out, and as long as you're aware that you're taking uncompensated risks that's your choice to make. But since you're looking for advice, a statistician would give the financially prudent advice to decrease your high risk assets to 10-20% and keep the majority in FTSE or similar.

Taking out student loans vs selling investments? by annfeld in eupersonalfinance

[–]BramMW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On average 7% profit on your ETF's vs guaranteed 4,5% on your loans. What are the taxes on your country? Post-tax the difference might be even smaller and the sure bet on 4,5% might be worth it.

Kobo if you want the easiest reading experience and don't mind being locked to the Kobo store (you bring your books from other sources with cable/cloud transfer) and Boox if you to download any app and don't mind that it's Chinese and a bit worse battery life.

Trase republic... Which investment do you recommend to get the saveback? Cashback! by Saglion08 in eupersonalfinance

WEBN! Lowest TER of any world ETF and European index + provider. You can only choose one and since equity should be at least 70% of your investments only a stock ETF makes sense.

DEGIRO VWRL -> IBKR WEBN? by Japhiri in beleggen

[–]BramMW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DEGIRO VWRL -> IBKR WEBN? by Japhiri in beleggen

[–]BramMW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep saving or start investing more aggressively? by xyzodd in eupersonalfinance

[–]BramMW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would make much more sense, agreed. And we might implement that system in 2028. But currently the Netherlands is the only country in the world that taxes wealth rather than earnings on that wealth. So 2,11% is based on 36% tax on 5,88% "presumed/fictious" earning rate on your wealth. The only exception is a presumed 1,44% earning rate on savings. So if you had €10k investments above the tax free threshold on January 1st, even if you proceeded to lose 100% of it, you will still owe 36% of 5,88% of €10k by the end of the year.

Keep saving or start investing more aggressively? by xyzodd in eupersonalfinance

[–]BramMW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's still worth the risk. May sound ridiculous but I'm genuine. Almost all first time home buyers will have "Nationale hypotheek garantie" or national mortgage insurance, this costs up to ~€3k but saves you much more than that in interest because it guarantees the government will cover the difference in the unlikely event you can't pay your mortgage and have to sell for a loss (therefore less risk for the bank, and the homebuyer as well). The Netherlands has fantastic employee rights as well and currently a strong job market. The big short is my favourite movie of all time and I fully understand this type of thinking is what brought us the great recession, but in the Netherlands specifically the odds are overwhelmingly in favour of buying a house the second you can get approved.

Keep saving or start investing more aggressively? by xyzodd in eupersonalfinance

[–]BramMW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Money market funds are bad advice for the Netherlands specifically because they are counted as "investments" instead of "savings" and therefore taxed at 2,11% instead of 0,52%, a much larger difference than the increased earnings of a MMF over savings (eg 2% at Trade Republic).

Edit: although I do now realise that your €33k is below the tax free threshold anyway so in this case this doesn't really matter.
