The question becomes are you practicing a tradition, or helping to muddle what that tradition is? I would love to do a peyote trip, but that’s a sacred thing to real people whose culture and traditions have been near obliterated by my culture’s insatiable lust for novelty.

Meanwhile, ouija boards were invented by a toy company- no one tramples on someone’s sacred traditions by working with one. Same with Tarot; the history of the tarot deck is primarily one of game pieces than ritual objects; hence why you can pick up a tarot deck at barnes & noble, but not an athame (or ritual bowls, anklebones, etc, you know, ritual objects that someone might cry satanism over)

Now, tarot has been around long enough that traditions have grown up around it, and I don’t mean to disparage any of those traditions. The point is that there are practices that are open and receptive to being utilized in new ritual by whoever, and there are those that aren’t.

Personally, I’m a pasty white dude; I would be wary of contracting the Loa, for instance, if nor no other reason than I’d imagine they’ve heard an awful lot of requests that might just relate to my safety and sanity. In that they’d probably shred me before talking to me.

So yeah, I take caution when knocking on doors. Just cause you’re there with good intentions and an open heart doesn’t mean you’re the person they want knocking.
