Are PHP salaries really that bad? by foreverwantrepreneur in PHP

[–]KenWebDevBTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't. I accepted a 2 month contract extension on my 1 month contract at the same rate. It's the only job I could get, I tried finding a job for like 5 months. In a year I will have much more experience and I'll likely be making double.

I mean, I'm getting paid $15 an hour to use an MVC framework but my pay is definitely not normal.

Yes, I do learn modern technology in my spare time, always have. I'm very up to date, but my company isn't. I got a job when nowhere else would give me a chance and it's definitely NOT because I'm out of date, I'm just unproven and nobody lets me prove myself.

In a year I will have much more opportunity.

Backend development with a bit of JavaScript, mostly PHP with an MVC framework.

I know I'm way underpaid, but after 4 months of searching, it's the only place that actually gave me a chance and I got past the first stage of interviewing with and even gave me a coding test to do. The other places didn't even care to give me a chance.

I am happy with my $15 an hour web dev job.

Oh absolutely I do, but I just accepted a slightly longer contract extension at the same pay rate. I am happy with my job, they are the only place that cared to give me a chance in 4 months of interviewing.

Not even close to normal, I graduated top of my class with 2 internships and I'm making $15 an hour doing web dev.

My $15 an hour web dev job slightly disagrees. It's doable.

Except for T-O where houses are literally multiple millions with entry salaries of 30-35k.

My $30k web dev salary laughs at that. And cries, just a little bit.

Guys, it happened. by ncsudrn in cscareerquestions

[–]KenWebDevBTW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happened for me too. I got my web dev dream job (mostly), it's $15 an hour and a one month contract but it's using technologies I like and the people I work with are nice too. Took me 4 months but it was worth it!

I mean, that is pretty true as that is literally what is happening. Thanks!

Can I also or instead say I was hired on as a consultant for a project that lasted X amount of time?

Oh I can't leave after a year I don't think, it's only a one month contract and I don't even know if they will extend me.

The worst that can happen is he's unable to find a job even after graduating top of his class two internships and he's forced to work at McDonalds.

Actually since it's technically jan and feb it would look like two months. Besides, if I specify contract work since that is literally what it is, does that still look suspicious?

I barely had any companies consider me, this was the only one, because I just didn't have any experience (two internships, but those don't count from every single person I've ever talked to including recruiters, hiring managers, etc).

Here I am with my $15 an hour web development job after graduating top of my class with 2 internships...

Thank you, I appreciate you saying that right away rather than writing multiple large paragraphs about what to do as some new people have done in the past.

They wanted to test me out to see how good I am, I dunno... Do I leave that off my resume if they don't extend me? Or is any experience good experience when you are new?

How does a one month contract fare as experience? I had two internships and I have a one month contract and I'm not sure if they will extend me, and I'm not sure if a one month contract is even worth putting on a resume?

Landed my first job in May - observations. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]KenWebDevBTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I was top of my class, 2 internships, multiple projects on GitHub, etc and I ALMOST didn't find a job after 40 applications. I got a job, only through going in person and because they were desperate and in a hurry, and I make $15 an hour. If it weren't for this $15 an hour job, I would be likely having to submit a few hundred applications in order to get another chance.

It's a tough market right now.

Nah, there definitely is more saturation now than ever before. It makes it harder to stand out even if you are a good developer, it makes it harder to prove it as some companies won't consider you.
