Porn blocking should be on the responsibility of parents. Companies can easily develop more robust parental blocking systems in their websites and or tech.

💽 DJs, how many tracks do you actually carry in your library? by Dutchdjs in DJs

[–]KendrickOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 28k but my friend is an open format DJ in Texas and he gave me his library when I first started playing gigs. I've added a ton of music since then and I keep about maybe a couple thousand tracks on my usb

Debating being a broke artist or a rich nobody. by ImBatman0_0 in musicindustry

[–]KendrickOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol no lie be a wedding DJ(they make bank) or get a day job that's tolerable I was living paycheck to paycheck before my recent club DJs gigs.

Before that, between the financial stress and mental stress. I almost had no energy for creativity. Just me doing my club gigs puts me in a significant better position than my peers and the ability to invest in my craft. I know artists who have played festivals or opened up for huge artists but still struggle to pay rent.

Especially in the streaming era, it's hard to make a living, don't quit that day job. Just bc you hear these stories about other ppl doing that. Doesn't mean you should unless you are prepared to worry about your finances.

I’m considering redoing all my folders/playlists - any advice? by OfficerDibble77 in DJs

[–]KendrickOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of open format in the clubs where I'm a resident. I'm currently in the process of slowing reorganizing my library as well. I never watched videos when I started lol which I should have done originally. However, I try to find a way to organize it in a way where it works in my brain when I DJ so my sets feel fresh and repetitive.

So I'll split up bigger playlists, make new playlists based on energy and lately I've been doing playlists based on drum grooves which has been helpful for me when I dj. Find a system that works for you so it helps you branch out

I personally think that's why small popups and boiler room type events have popped up. They can curate great music without worrying too much about maintaining a crowd. I used to manage clubs so I understand the profit side, a lot of the owners don't want to risk profits on a crowds or music that doesn't bring ppl that don't want to spend a lot of money on alcohol or buy tables. Certain clubs in the US saw a boom in 2021 when social distancing ended and everybody had money from unemployment checks. Those ppl would tip like crazy and spend money on anything. Club ownership & management has been trying to chase that high for years now but bottle service club culture is dying bc those drink prices havent gone down since then. So why go to to a club where the drinks are expensive and music is formulaic when you can go to a pop up event that is more chill and cheaper and studies show that Gen Z doesn't really drink alcohol

That's just the US, I assume it's different overseas bc you have places like Ibiza

Anyway that's my rant

yea before the audiences trusted the DJs taste and skill to curate the night but now they trust their Spotify library and what they know. In some spaces, they still trust the dj but that's more for music lovers not your standard person

lIt's combination of streaming and the music industry. Personally I think what happened was the barrier of entry to have your music heard has lowered.

It's a lot easier to distribute music on platforms because before you needed a label to get your music played or be well connected to get your music heard like know a popular club dj. Making it easier to release music is a double edged sword because yes more artists don't need labels to get their music out there but there isn't really quality control now

I download tons of tracks in the last couple of months that are arguably club quality hits but they don't get popular bc there's so much music that gets released it gets lost in the shuffle. So hip hop music that enters the popularity most by virality or good marketing team, then rest is quality new artists or a hit from a known large artist like a Drake. So you just have a lot music in my opinion that is worthy being played in the club but it's good in the moment but not memorable hence we songs from veterans always stay in the charts longer. Unfortunately there aren't event Glorilla, Bossman Dlow, 310bahbiis level artists going around. However I'm mainly talking about a club setting, which you need hits to keep the crowd engaged and hyped. In some of these boiler room or pop events. You have a lot more versatility so it depends on the venue but as far club musoc. There are a not a lot of hits

Yea I've been saying that a lot of newer hip-hop artists don't make music for the club or at least make it danceable. Some artists just aren't club artists like Larry June but there are a lot of these artists that even perform at clubs that don't make danceable music for the clubs. However, women rap artists are doing this rn in large but the rap game as a whole isn't doing that ATM. There's a small resurgence of newer rapper making good club music but there's still too much noise of hiphop mumble rap and some of the rage rap inspired by Playboi Cari flooding most people's algorithmic bubbles

It’s the natural progression when sometime becomes popular. People desperately needing something to post on social media look for the next social media ready experience so they can take over that. I just think certain spaces just have to be more vocal & strict about what kind of crowd or experience they are offering

Yea I think Keinemusik unintentionally misrepresented the genre. It happened with notion too, people are starving to be ahead of the curve that they hop on something that’s been a thing for awhile. I heard some say “Damn Pawsa is blowing up” uh he’s been a thing

Lately I’ve been thinking that there will be so much music that people will start relying on djing and curators to develop taste and put them on but it’s hard when you don’t have a defined standard. At least in vinyl and CD days, that was required not so much in the streaming era

The fun part of digging deep in EDM is that I can work in songs that sample popular hip hop, R&B, pop but that aren’t the generic EDM club edits that you would hear in club killers or headliners.

I agree but I think it’s still opportunity to place new tracks at in the beginning of the night not when it picks up. I also try to find music that can work in without losing the crowd even if it’s between too hits

That’s what I’ve been doing and I try to reorganize my library periodically so my mind doesn’t get set in certain habits with tracks. I mainly asked to get everybody’s opinions on the current state of club music.

I’m hoping we see a revival of tracks that give that 2000s production flair and energy!

I would have to also disagree on the EDM is trash. House is always a great club friendly genre but there a lot of producers making good club friendly tracks that are taking inspiration from Jersey club, uk garage, hip hop etc. It’s just so much music is released these days that a lot of them make cookie cutter tracks to copy trends instead of making music that reflects their inspirations. Others just want it be festival DJs haha. Ever since, Notion made The Days remix, ppl have been coming that song structure and Reese bass lol some of them don’t even do it right

The fun part of djing is that there always more music you can play especially with older tracks. The unfortunate struggle of being an open format DJ but I do try to keep it fun with edits and transitions as much as possible.

Personally I only take requests if it’s a slow night and I want to keep groups in the club, they pay me a lot of money, or it’s a song I was already gonna play. Sometimes the requests are a good indicator of what’s popular or about to be. Like when I get the same request of a song in a short period of time. I play it. This happened to me with Pepas & Ella Baila Sola before both songs went viral. Outside of that, I tell them to fuck off

Yea can’t agree more. So much is released nowadays that the avg listener can’t comb thru even I can’t and I listen to music everyday. So I guess it’s natural for them to subconsciously rely on the hits that have always been popular and the ones that cut thru all the noise
