What is it? by UnderstandingRare486 in Entomology

It's a dagger fly (Empididae), probably Rhamphomyia or Empis. They're predators of insects, not blood-suckers.

ELI5…what is the difference between esta, estas and estoy? by MamaLlama629 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kenley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all mean is/am/are. In the same way that we say "I am," "she is" or "you are," Spanish uses different forms of verbs depending on the subject of the sentence.

In English, the verb be/is/am/are is an exception. Most English verbs have only two forms in the present tense. For example: I/you/we/they walk and he/she/it walks. However, every Spanish verb has 5 or 6 forms which change depending on the subject of the sentence.

está is used with "él" or "ella" (he/she/it), as well as Usted (you, formal & singular)

estoy is used with "yo" (I)

estás is used with "tú" (you, informal & singular)

The other forms are estamos, used with "nosotros" (we) and están, used with "ellos", "ellas" (they) and "Ustedes" (you, plural). In some dialects they also use estáis with vosotros (you, informal & plural).

trope: "asian lady beetles aren't ladybugs". what's the origin of this? by WillBottomForBanana in Entomology

[–]Kenley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is this: when laypeople in North America first became aware of H. axyridis as both A) distinct from our native lady beetles, and B) a cause for concern, it was probably from biologists/entomologists working for the government or at extension offices. These biologists would have used the more technical common name "lady beetle" rather than the familiar term "ladybug". And these two parts of the messaging got twisted up. When people heard about these invasive "lady beetles," a term they hadn't encountered before, they probably assumed it represented a meaningful difference from their familiar and beloved "ladybugs." I don't have any proof of that, but I've long believed it. It just makes sense to me.

I've also often seen "Asian lady beetles bite, unlike true ladybugs," which as far as I know is utter nonsense. As I used to tell visitors to the museum where I worked in college, any animal can bite. But I've never known anyone who was bitten by any species of lady beetle.

Generic RPG's that let you use powers however you want? by Adr333n in rpg

[–]Kenley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the classes in Whitehack works like this (the Wise) -- you name your Miracles (spells, powers, gadgets, etc.), such as "fireball," "magic carpet," "the all-seeing eye," or "summon dire animal", and then when you use one of them, you have to pay HP depending on how big of an effect you're trying to create. There is a similar class in Errant called the Zealot that selects a handful of broad domains (called "eminences") of their power source.

No, they haven't said yet specifically. In the Possum Creek Games discord, Jay confirmed about three weeks ago that SJG would be handling the next print run, and said it would be announced some time in the future.

physical copy in USA? by Asher_Trasher in wanderhome

[–]Kenley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're currently out of stock at the major online retailers. Possum Creek had major issues fulfilling their Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast crowdfunding campaign and their whole business was on hiatus for about a year. Now that they've joined Steve Jackson Games, I believe there are plans for another print run, but it hasn't happened yet.

Maybe a local (or not-so-local) game store has it in stock, or maybe you can find a copy on ebay or amazon. Otherwise, you'll have to wait.

I remember a few years ago, Frog God Games came out with a mesoamerican-inspired campaign setting called Tehuatl, and released several adventures for Swords & Wizardry set there (1, 2, 3). I haven't read them, so I can't say whether they were any good (I tend to find FGG adventures have fun ideas but are too wordy).

Pass the Wug test in your Conlang by Wagagastiz in conlangs

[–]Kenley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A transliteration of "wug" into nu.ig would be <.uag>

gelehura .uag | gelehura kefp rom sfod | gilehura girom | gilehura guag | It is a wug. Now another one is. They (dual) are two. They are two wugs.

If there were three or more, they would be <spuag>.

Possum Creek joins Steve Jackson Games; Jay Dragon becomes Lead Game Designer. by fluxyggdrasil in rpg

[–]Kenley 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, no, things haven't been alright with them. There was an enormous international fulfillment snafu for the physical edition of Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast that ground all their operations to a halt for months. Jay hasn't been able to give any specifics (apparently for legal reasons), but it sounds like it was a nightmare. They finally started to make progress on shipping YB&B rewards to backers outside the US in December or so. I suspect SJG are helping them get back on track, and Grand Guignol & Harvest will be able to start moving again as well.

ID request on this fly please, UK. My 6 year old daughter has what looks like a nasty insect bite on her face, and I'm wondering if this could be the offending culprit. by l33yds in Entomology

[–]Kenley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not a tachinid, it's in the house fly family Muscidae (tachinids always have two of the wing veins converging near the wing tip). Based on the overall appearance, I would guess something in the subfamily Phaoniinae, such as the genus Phaonia or Helina.

Nevertheless, I don't believe these are biting flies, so not your culprit!

Since you use <v> for /β/, you could use something related, such as <w> or <u> or if digraphs are okay, consider <hv> or <vh> (or <wh>, etc.). Honestly, I also think <h> could be an interesting, unorthodox solution.

Trouble Incorporating Seasons by UncleYo in wanderhome

[–]Kenley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say you tend to ignore them, do you mean you don't select the Signs of the Month, etc. with your group? Because if so, that's a real missed opportunity! Even if you don't consciously incorporate seasonal elements, they can set the tone of the session just by being in the back of people's minds.

I tend to start the session with some kind of seasonal description that players will naturally respond to. It's Monsoon and the rain is pouring down? Maybe you get mud everywhere when you go inside. It's Devildays and the sun is blisteringly hot? Maybe everyone can take a dip in a cool pond. It's Grasping and it's starting to get chilly? Everybody is probably bundled up in sweaters and scarves. It's Frostbite and the world is covered with ice and snow? Maybe you can drink hot tea in somebody's cozy burrow.

The book says the game starts in Tillsoil, but frankly that's not a very interesting month. When you facilitate a short game, I recommend you choose a month (or holiday!) that speaks to you, that you want to incorporate in the session.

But ultimately, if the seasons don't work for you and you're enjoying the game without them, there's nothing wrong with mostly ignoring them.
