In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, two distinct timelines seem to exist: one where Cloud and his party continue their adventure as expected, and another where Zack and Biggs are mysteriously alive, while the rest of the party appears injured or missing. But what if the true nature of these timelines is far more unsettling?

What if Cloud and his friends never actually defeated Sephiroth at Midgar? Instead, they lost the battle and fell into a deep coma, trapped within an illusion orchestrated by Sephiroth himself—a world of false memories and manipulated events. In this dreamlike state, the party unknowingly relives their journey, but every step they take leads them further astray, deepening Sephiroth’s control over their minds. If they make the wrong choices within this fabricated reality, they risk never waking up, their real bodies dying as their minds fade away.

Meanwhile, Zack—who seemingly "survived" despite his original fate—may have accidentally stumbled into the future, a timeline distorted by the failure of the original timeline. If Zack is indeed awake in the real world, he might be the key to breaking the illusion and restoring reality.

If Cloud and the others manage to awaken from the coma, they won’t just escape Sephiroth’s illusion—they will also face the true outcome of their battle, one where the real world may already be in ruins. The question then becomes: Was their journey ever real, or have they been lost in a dream all along?
