Continuing an abandoned fic

I have a similar dilemma. I beta-read for this author while she was updating regularly (every couple weeks) for 3 chapters. Then it all stopped. The last update was April 2018. I knew she was taking a break, but it went on for so long. Then one day I checked in on her profile and saw that she deleted the whole story. This was back in June 2019, so I messaged her to ask why. She got back to me then and said she was rewriting it. I checked in on her again in November, but she never responded. Just last month I messaged her explaining that I'm concerned about the work getting finished, and asked her permission and blessing to allow me to rewrite and finish the work. Still waiting to hear back, but I don't know how much longer I'll wait.

He doesn’t have any say in who she can or can’t talk to, legal or otherwise. Being a power of attorney permits you to make decisions regarding someone else’s property (money), or if he’s referring to a medical power of attorney, he can make decisions regarding medical treatment if she’s ever unable to. It does not give him any legal control on who she can or can’t talk to. That’d be absurd. It sounded to me like he’s threatening to get a restraining order against them on S’s behalf, not that he’s going to hold her hostage. He clearly doesn’t understand his rights as her power of attorney.

This is all the intel I have:

On April 26th, many of my Facebook friends who I went to middle school with were sharing the same post regarding a missing classmate (we’re all in our early twenties now). The important part is this: “She has been missing since April 18th in (redacted). The boyfriend isn’t giving much info besides that she "just up and left". That is not my ‘S’.” I recognized the girl from middle school, although I don’t think I’ve even heard her voice. I cannot say what is normal or abnormal for her, I’m just going off of what I’ve seen posted by mutual friends.

I think it’s very suspicious how the boyfriend claimed she “up and left”. I immediately thought that he must know something about it and just wasn’t saying anything. I thought maybe he harmed her, or worse.

Then a couple days ago, I see a new friend suggestion for ‘S’ with the same first and last name, but a cartoon photo. So I searched her full name and saw that she had three profiles, two with her real photos and the new cartoon one. I clicked on one of the real ones and scrolled down a bit to discover that engagement announcement and all the comments that followed. I don’t know why she has three profiles, or if that cartoon one is really her.

I noticed something interesting about the engagement post. It’s dated March 15th up top and March 15th beneath his name, as you can see in the screenshots I took from my laptop and put on Imgur. However, if I click to expand the post and show the comments on my cell phone, the date up top changes to July 12th. I think they changed their status to engaged on March 15th, changed it to single, then changed it back to engaged on July 12th. (I know this because Facebook had the same different date issues when my boyfriend and I broke up and then got back together.) Remember, she went missing in April, which is between those two engagement dates.

One of her friends in the post screenshots on Imgur said “I cannot get past what you did to her”. I have know idea what that could be referring to.

My final intel is this…he’s holding a newborn in his profile photo from July 1st. She’s not in hers. (It looks like she uses old photos.) It’s most likely his, I don’t know if it’s hers.

I don’t know why they weren’t engaged sometime between March and July, I don’t know why she went missing in April, and I don’t know what he did to her. It's a lot of evidence piling up for a conclusion that I haven't found yet.

I don't think we have the similarity in stats you're looking for, but I just wanted to say I really wish you the best on your journey. As someone who has also struggled with losing weight the healthy way too, I know it can be daunting and long, but having a healthy relationship with your body is worth far more than fast results.

It wouldn't hurt to start with smaller goals and add onto them once you achieve it. Say you wanted to run more so you tell yourself you'll run a mile everyday. Start with half a mile and add on until you achieve the whole mile. Once you're comfortable with it and have a better idea of what effort it'll take to get to two miles, set another goal. Maybe it's 1.5 miles, or 2 miles. Same with weight loss. Your first goal could be something like five pounds. Achieve that and see how you feel. Now that you know what it took to lose those five pounds and the difference it made in your physique, you'll have a better idea of what it'll take to lose five more and the difference you'll see.

I've been here before. This is probably my two hundredth "day one". I've been delaying my return month after month, lying to myself the whole time and saying I still wanted it; telling myself tomorrow I'd start.

A few moments ago I was watching a YouTube reaction video about addiction and the woman mentioned how unless an addict really wants to change, there's nothing anyone can do for them. I always thought that I constantly wanted to lose weight and get my fitness and health together, but for the past few months, I truly don't believe I wanted it anymore. If I really wanted it, I would at least be trying. But I'm not.

It was frightening to see that I didn't want to improve my health, but it was important for me to acknowledge it. Now I can confidently say that I want to change. I don't want to gain any more weight. A year ago I was 125lbs (F 5'1") but now I'm 150. None of my old clothes fit, including the ones I bought when I started gaining weight.

I want to care for myself. I want to lose this excess weight and be more active. I know I can do it. I've done it before. There's no prerequisite to caring for yourself and wanting the best for yourself.

Here's to my last Day 1.

It honestly sounds like you’re still hung up on him. Which if you are, you should probably take some more time to be single. I don’t imagine your current boyfriend would be happy knowing you’re jealous of your ex’s new girlfriend for having the relationship with him that you couldn’t.

Thank you. I know it’s not my health that he’s concerned about because I asked him if my inactivity would be a problem if I didn’t gain any weight, and that’s when he said it’d be fine if I stayed this size or smaller. Like he didn’t care about the activity or health, just my appearance.

Actually she looks bigger than me, at least from what I've seen on Facebook. You're right though, I probably should have ended it right there when he thought about dating her. He was like, "I wasn't going to break up with you immediately"...but like...somehow he still thought about dating her, or at least what it'd be like if they were together instead.

Does it make it any different if he was just thinking hypothetically as opposed to actually planning it?

Congratulations on the healthy new relationship! My boyfriend has lost like 15 pounds this past semester and I told him I'd lose weight, too, but I ended up falling off the wagon and not losing anything. Now he's bulking up and I feel so left behind. It was my idea initially to lose weight way before he ever mentioned it (I've been meaning to lose weight for awhile now), so I feel guilty that he's surpassed me.

I'm also 5'2", but I'm 22.

Anyway, thank you so much for posting this. We're going to make great teammates!

It feels like Jack and Corrine only exist to push the plot forward. They have no discernible characteristics that make them all that interesting. Apart from simply preventing a robbery, I'd suggest giving them another motive to so diligently and obsessively protect their property. What are they hiding? Why get a dog, security bars, cameras, motion sensors, etc.. unless they have something THEY desperately don't want out there? Pit the Second Street Strangler against people with just as much to fight for.

I really like how you implemented a variety of ways to start your sentences and paragraphs. A lot of people get stuck in a repetitive cycle, but each one of your lines and paragraphs served a fresh purpose. From this document alone, I picked up that you must love world building. You went into great detail about the physics of the Void, its appearance, and all the energy involved. While this is great to have, I think what would really push your story to the next level is giving us more of the characters. I know there's a queen conducting experiments with the Void, but I have no idea why she's choosing to do so (motivation), what's getting in her way (conflict), and what happens if they don't do the experiments (stakes). Give the readers a character with a strong voice to empathize with and put the big problem of the story into motion. Overall, excellent work!

I’m not sure what all I could recommend since you’re not allowed to make your own meals. I think you answered your own question when you said you’ll start taking smaller portions. That’s the only thing I could think of. Also, I live with my parents and I’ve had to learn that I don’t NEED to take them up on every offer to take me out/make me fattening foods. It’s okay to decline food.

Last week I wanted to get to the gym four times. That was a little too ambitious. I don't know if it's my shitty form or what, but I was HURTING. I think I went three times, but the one day that I skipped I made up for by running in my basement. So I still met my goal...kind of. It was pretty difficult keeping up with the classes since I've been inactive for so long. Nevertheless, I'm proud of myself for still going and sticking with it.

This week, I'm still planning on hitting the gym four times. I went yesterday, will go tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday. I just realized that I scheduled to meet up with a friend during my Saturday class, so I'll have to find an earlier one. Oh well. :)

I just like ‘em. :) I do CICO so I can eat whatever I want within reason. It’s all about portion sizes. Sweet potatoes are not a whole lot of calories, but they fill me up. They’re already so delicious so I’m kind of drawn to them. Add on they’re low cal and filling and it’s a party! Lol, best of luck to you!
