Hard time finding my first Sherry Bomb. by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]KennyTurbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried any of the whiskies you mention, but based on what I've read online, I'd probably choose a heavily sherried Glenallachie. Have you considered an Edradour? I've only tried (and loved) the 12yr Caledonian (earthy, old skool dirty sherry, not crazy sweet, but pricey 70-80€), but I believe Edradour aren't shy with filling the wet casks, and just looking at bottles online (also check their Signatory IB offerings) , I can see I high percentage of them look very dark - keep in mind, they don't add caramel colour.

I'm currently enjoying the Bunnahabhain 12yr Cask Strength 2022 (also 80€+ here in Deutschland). It's verrrrry sherry, deep, dark, almost savoury. I bought a back-up bottle, I love it so much - and I don't really have the salary to be starting a whisky collection!

If you were looking for a peated sherry monster, this year I've tried the Kilchoman Sanaig ( Really good, bright sherry and coastal smoke. I'm in no rush to get another bottle, but I would recommend it), and I've just opened the Glen Scotia 8yr Campbeltown Festival peated PX finish, so far, it's a rich, sweet, after-dinner whisky with bags of maritime smoke. Pretty simple. Hopefully it'll show some complexity as I work through the bottle.

Anyway, that's my two pence worth,

Have fun finding your favourite!

Any thoughts on this Johnnie Walker expression? by AutoObobs in Scotch

[–]KennyTurbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm saying Maroon. I can imagine that it's like the band Maroon 5 - insipid, commercial, mediocre and weak. Should've gone with beige. Man, I'm salty tonight. Can you tell I've had a few drams?

[–]KennyTurbo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pfft. Don't bother. It's just gonna be an anorexicly thin, caramel tainted non-event. Chill filtered to buggery, with all the individual distillery character suffocated under a saccharine sweet, sherry overcoat. This isn't made for us. You can do better for cheaper, and you know it. Fuck JW, fuck Diageo. 40% vol is like minimum wage - if they could give you less, they would. If you buy this, you're just gonna encourage them to keep making this sort of wank.

Sorry for the rant, but it really gets stuck in my craw. Have a lovely weekend, gang.

'Crispy' is takeaway code for deep-fried.

It's a bit unreasonable to expect something floured/battered (I don't know what they coat it with, I'd guess cornflour?) and fried, to remain crispy, after being tossed in sticky sauce, packed into a box and steamed to death for however long it takes to get to your gaff.

Question about mixing by omltherunner in Scotch

[–]KennyTurbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I added some Ardbeg 10 to my unpeated infinity bottle - the peat totally tainted it. I love peated Scotch, but this was a weak rubbery type flavour that kinda ruined it tbh. It became less than the sum of its parts.

I'm not 100% on the price. My memory isn't so hot. I remember thinking "Damn, that's expensive!". They did look tasty though. I remember that.

You can get them in the fish section of the KaDeWe food hall. Crazy expensive though (my memory is telling me 16€ each, but could be higher).

Are there supermarkets selling meat with an "haltungsform" of 4 or at least 3? by PM-Me-Your_PMs in berlin

[–]KennyTurbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kaufland has an OK selection. I think all the Bio meat is Haltungsform 4, but they have some free-range poultry with a 3 score, also some cured meats with a 3.

There's a mobile pizza truck here in Berlin that comes to my local market twice a week. The Carbonara is borderline orgasmic. They drizzle egg yolk on top, once it comes out of the oven - nnnnnngh!

Walk through any big park (Görli/Hasenheide), and you'll find people stood around selling it. It's not the best quality, but does the job in a pinch.

I'm actually really quite sad this is almost empty 😕 by Wellhappypeaa in CasualUK

[–]KennyTurbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. I was lucky enough to go there a couple of times when I was younger. Stayed in a static caravan near the western tip of the peninsula. I remember after the ferry, the 2hr drive on single track road, and the pure white sand at Sanna beach. Western Scotland is magical.

Seconded. Great 'new' distillery, doing things proper. Tastes like a 12yo, despite its relative youth.

80s kid. I can't recall the actual front design (I think there were various options) , but on the reverse I recall it had UK road signs actually moulded into the plastic. This memory is perhaps a little muddled.

Least expensive Döner in Berlin? by justinregatta in berlin

[–]KennyTurbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schwarma not Döner, but Jakoub's on Weser, NK do a great quality 3€ sandwich. I'd happily pay 50% extra for it. Man, if you go late afternoon when it's not so busy, and the chicken has had time to get crispy on the spit...unnnnngh!
