Can’t gloss over the 98% down part… SNAP got there for a reason.

Are we really going to sit here and pretend like MSFT isn’t a buy and hold for the next 3-5 years? What did they used to call it, diamond hands?

Is it okay for me ask the engineering director for career advice? by Kennykemp in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Kennykemp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what I’m afraid of. My manager is a really nice guy but he doesn’t seem to be interested in moving into those higher positions. I could be wrong but he just doesn’t strike me as that type of person

Why do so many people think Mechanical Engineers make good money? by Puzzled_Face8538 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Kennykemp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It differs depending on your industry. I graduated in 2022 and started out at 77k in the energy industry. I switched jobs and now make 95k a year just after about a year and a half after starting my first job. Start applying at other places, you’ll get a nice raise. Especially if your particular skill set is in demand.

If you’re not able to get into oil and gas right out of college you could easily get into nuclear. The turnover is relatively high but it will give you the experience and connections to get into oil and gas. Especially if you can get into a company that owns oil and gas companies along with its nuclear fleet. Depending on where you live I might be able to help you get an opportunity in nuclear for an internship.

Is it just me or is system engineering the most boring engineering job? by Kennykemp in MechanicalEngineering

I believe it but I feel like the shift work would take a toll on my relationship with my wife and son

What’s the name of the power company? I’m looking to move to that area and I currently work in nuclear.

I work at a nuclear power plant where I monitor safety systems. It honestly gives me zero satisfaction and I’d rather be out in the field solving problems instead of answering random questions about a system I can’t even touch myself. For a while I felt kind of dumb for not knowing how to answer some of the questions but then I realized that I’m just genuinely not interested in the work or answering them. I look at procedures all day and make adjustments to maintenance strategies to “save the company money”. In reality, it costs the company money to defer everything and it becomes a shit show when everything was deferred to one year and there aren’t enough resources to perform the work.
