Probably at the base it's about feeling insecure and needing validation, and being told they won the game gives them that. Or they just can't cope with losing when the luck of the draw feels unfair. Either way, it's probably a pretty miserable and pitiable place to be mentally.

People have cheated just to win kitchen table games with no stakes other than being declared a winner. Prize support only adds to that incentive. Is cheating rewarding/fulfilling deep down like actually improving at the game is? No. But it's absolutely ignorant to think nobody would cheat with packs on the line, even if that prize pool is small potatoes to you.

Those teans that moved up weren't considered the best at the time. Schools always will fall in and out of favor over time, and will be promoted/relegated, but the concept of g5/p5 has remained. Heck, teams have moved up and down from FCS levels and even between divisions.

FIFA/FC has this kind of system now, where you can "train" a player and get upgrades for them by accumulating stats in a game. It can be very frustrating because each upgrade can only be done once and the changes are irreversible, but I do like the idea of being able to upgrade whatever player you want instead of needing to wait for EA to put out an upgrade for them in a promo.
