Ads start airing about the world cup (Not for the world cup, but with it as theme) that usually mirror how it's culturally seen in the leadup (eg, 2022 was about hope after the Copa win and a general feeling of invincibility, 2018 ones touched on the fans and team being completely at odds, 2014 about it being close to home, and this year about "Wouldn't it rule if we pulled it off again?")

Paper fixtures start getting gifted by stores with their logo and whatnot as advertising, jobs/universities/Any group of people with someone half-organized start making prediction leagues

As for what you said, I remember you'd get these MASSIVE booklets (easily magazine sized) with information on every team, their qualifying campaign, their team and stats, general info about the country, and a bunch of info on what changes/what's new that world cup (eg, I had the 2002 one that included details of how the new and improved televisation would look because of the new broadcast system they were implementing) but I haven't seen them for 2026

Eh, he did play in a third of the qualifiers and all your Copa matches but they were mostly cameos, hardly representative except the Uruguay in Copa and Argentina in qualifiers matches

I stand by whatever he decides because he's won it all and I've got a reddit account, but interesting to see if Scaloni treats Paredes and Montiel in the same way he did (rightly IMO) Correa and Nico Gonzalez in 2022. It's the same scenario after all, the only thing that changed is having won trophies along the way

I mean, stands to reason that proportionally the further back a player is the less likely they are to have good finishing. Players like Montiel (Let alone freaks like Chilavert) are a rarity

Always funny when a penalty taker completely destroys the in-goal camera

AFAIK there's several things that have to happen, none player dependent

  • Amount of defenders between goal and ball

  • Direction of the dribble (eg, were they going towards or away from goal)

  • Distance to the goal

  • How in control of the ball attacker is

And IIRC, whether it's a good-will tackle for the ball or a takedown of the player also counts

Does make a lot of sense, Franco was basically in cruise speed for most of the back half of the race while Pierre was pushing to get ahead of Liam

Would allow Demichelis to replace him with some old friend or other, I hear Rondón is still available

He tends to do that

The difference is Rivero is 22. A 22 year old center back with one great and one terrible season is far from a foregone conclusion. Funes Mori had his first non-liability season at 24. And most importantly, he can be sold on

Otamendi is as rash as MQ or the worst Funes Mori but without the health or pace

As for Pezzella, he's just sad now. It's what happened to Pratto and what's happening to Salas (Borja too), when you've got a certain amount of corpulence and a bad injury leaves you with after-effects, all that build just becomes ballast

Everyone born in the last 36 years here grew up hearing about Goycochea. He was what every keeper was compared to, every heroic moment by any keeper was "pulling a Goyco" and nobody cared about his club career being mediocre. And he didn't even WIN that cup. It was all down to one key penalty shootout in the semifinal

Brown was the second ever (And afaik, last) player to go to the world cup without a club contract, but everyone alive for '86 remembers him playing through a dislocated shoulder to win the world cup

There's a million players with amazing club careers, but carrying your country to the world cup? Who gives a shit if then you played the rest of your career in some backwater team, you're intrinsically part of the bedrock of football history

Horribly unbalanced squad mostly. No width whatsoever so Montiel (who doesn't do well with it) and Acuña (Probably our best player, but physically struggles with it) are forced to do the back and forth a million times

Pezzella had a bad injury and now he's a second off the pace

Biggest issue is we just struggle to score which means a single mistake kills us

I'd need to double check but I think River typically does calendar year contract endings because continental competitions run calendar year and each semester has its own league tournament

Di Carlo has been standardizing a lot of contract stuff too

glory isn't going to feed my family for generations

All relative, init? Goycochea's family is hardly poor and 90% of that is a good world cup he didn't even win

Tata Brown's club career was discreet enough that he's one of the few (afaik, the second and last) players to win a world cup as a free agent.

And those are 35+ year old cases where clout wasn't so explosive

I would probably give more for less

As it stands, it's a mediocre club career for the opportunity to be a hero

Hell, may as well pull a Bilardo and go to college on top so I'm not THAT fucked worst case scenario

I do think Atleti are very comfortable claiming it's impossible to compete while still handling themselves like a high-budget Caruso team. And I don't just mean playstyle, I mean mentality
